IL Vent...kind of long..
My BIL & SIL have 3 children....in the past month I have received no less than 4 different envelopes to purchase magazine subscriptions for various fundraising ...school, religion, girls scouts, sports, cub scouts, etc.
Do not get me wrong, I don't mind helping out here and there, but I have been bombarded in the past 4 weeks. And apparently I didn't react quickly enough to a few of the magazine requests because I got 2nd request envelopes! So now after I dropped about $75 between 2 kids (the other is not in school yet) for wrapping paper,etc. that was super expensive and about $25 on cookies, now you want me to spend over $125 on magazine subscriptions? Come on, give me a break.
And yes, I have talked to SIL, kind of saying "oh, did you know I got that already?"..she said, yes, well you don't have kids so I thought you would want to help out your niece and nephew.
I'm sorry. It's nervy.

I hate that. I get hit up at work a lot too.
Of course you are happy to help your nieces and nephews but at some point your BIL&SIL should have the sense to back off. Not having kids does not mean you have to buy ton$$$$$$ of overpriced crap.

I detest those things. the only ones i contribute to are the ones that i actually CAN use - like cookies or wrapping paper. I politely decline everything else. As long as my sister didn't have to lay out any money, I couldn't care less.
BUT I do understand the pressure to help out.

Honestly, I throw that sh!t right in the garbage. Sorry but I do.
We donate to a lot of charities- and anytime anyone is doing a run/walk/jump rope whatever for cancer, heart, lung, what have you- my husband makes a GENEROUS donation.
But I don't read magazines. Sorry I don't. And I'm not spending money on cr@p I don't need or want.
Cookies I'll buy because I eat them.
Wrapping paper no way- sorry that stuff is WAY over priced.
I honestly would rather just write you a check if you need money that bad. Rather than buy sh!t I don't need or want.
Sorry if it's cold... it's just how I feel.

Yeah, my BIL is a huge offender of this, he LOVES to plan how to spend our money...at Easter Sunday dinner he was talking about how he and my DH are going to turn my DH's dilapated pick up truck into a hot rod..OH REALLY? With whose money? Oh, he told me he would do all the work and we would buy the parts. But it would be THEIR truck after that. OH REALLY? DH looked at him like he was out of his mind and said "yeah, thanks for spending MY money azzhole".

I can't do it all!! I think people forget that these things add up. $20 here and there per season.. adds up.. especially if it is stuff you DON'T want or need.

Reminds me of the SATC episode where Carrie was always buying her friend presents for showers, weddings and birthdays. Since she never got anything in return (and her manolos were stolen  ) she registered herself at her fav shoe store. That's one of my fav episodes!!

I reads this as my laptop sits upon a stack of unread Victorian Homes, Rolling Stone, Romantic Homes, Birds and Blooms (I do like this one a little!) and others. I feel your pain!

It does get a little annoying but I know sometimes they (whatever group its coming from) gets credit just for all the names and addresses collected. When my sister was in girl scouts she would have to submit names and addresses and they would mail out the postcard for magazine subscriptions. But my mom would always include a note saying "Please dont feel obligated, we get credit just for supplying names." Obviously if you do purchase something they get more credit but they still do even if you dont.
