It may seem harsh, but if it were a European country that had to deal with the same issue, very little would be said.

I don't understand why the US has to be a police force for the world and why it should open its "doors" to everyone who wants to come here. No one chooses to be be born into a country, but shouldn't those who happen to be born here get helped first? IMO there are so many problems within the US (homelessness, poverty, lack of healthcare) that should be focused on before looking to help those who come or want to come here illegally.
Wow...I see your point, but no I feel 100% differently.
I dont see myself as an american first..I see myself as a HUMAN first and would do anything to save a fellow human from suffering... We need to help those who suffer MOST first, not depending on their geographically location.
we are living in the US because of LUCK...we were lucky to have been born here or by people who choose to leave...

it's funny how some people forget that this country is made of inmigrants who at one point or another were not legal in this country.
I'm all for giving this people who are only looking for a better life, the opportunity to become legal residents of this country.
Coming over and going through Ellis Island, which is how most of our ancestors got here, was legal. Sneaking over the boarder because you want to avoid bureacracy is illegal-it's plain and simple to me. We offer political, and religious asylum to those in emergency situations, so if person wishes to come here there is really no reason not to do it legally.

But if that was the case Donna, then we ALL should be sending the money that the government is taxing us for to supplement the schools, social services and healthcare costs for the current illegals over to places like Kenya, Nigeria, etc. where literally thousands of children are dying from starvation every single week. I would much rather (and do) support people (particularly children) who don't have even the basic of necessities, like water, etc. then some able bodied men who are receiving tax free money on a daily basis.

Re: Illegal immigration debate
IMO the people who so desperately want to sneak into this country have great reason to do so
the average Mexican in Mexico makes about $4 UDS a day
they can make $100 a day here and they come they work they send it back home to help
they perform many jobs that Americans think they are above- just like all the other immigrant groups who have come before them
if the situation were reversed- how many of you would try sneaking over the boarder- I know I would
the bottom line is we need them to run our economy

But why should it be easy? If I wanted to immigrate to Canada or Swizerland, I would NOT be able to so why should be immigrating to the US and receiving all the benefits be easy?

While I appreciate your viewpoint, a blanket statement about our country just isn't realistic. The problem with America is that it has become "land of the free"...free healthcare, free services, free education. But it's not free...it's coming at a dear price. The middle class is becoming as extinct as the dinosaur because we're overburdened with taxes and expenses for others. Why do you think there is over 23,000 houses for sale on Long Island? No one can afford to live here. I'm working 3 jobs and I still live paycheck to paycheck. It's not like we live high on the hog...it's just to cover basic needs. Sorry but Charity has to start at home.
As Snoop Dog said "They've all got their cups, but they ain't chipped in".

They are here and make money...do not pay taxes and on top of that, most of the money they make is not even invested here in this country because most of them send them back to their families in their country.....I don't see how is that helping our economy.....

I understand that there are laws. This is why i feel that if these people were given the chance to work and pay taxes legally, there would not be all of these illegal immigrants. And don't worry, this will not make everyone move to the US. There are people who want to stay in their countries and enjoy nice carribean weather all year long.

Hmmmm, who's paying them that $100 a day? Don't forget, NOT reporting a worker and NOT contributing to SS for him is also a crime. If the immigrant gardener is committing a crime,so is his "American" boss.

I agree with Bush's plan. I think it is fair and reasonable. I think we should crackdown on illegals coming in but I think that we should not criminalize those that are here already. If we do that, we spend more tax money in the courts!

if no one hired them- they wouldn't come- the Americans who hire them are the real problem- not the people who come here just looking to better there lives and the lives of there familes
they are the ones who are benefitting from the "cheap" labor

I agree with this 100%. We were talking about it at dinner last night and that's what I said. They do jobs the average white american would never do, and for less $$. Jay leno made a joke saying that without illegal immigrants, a head of lettuce would cost $300. Illegal Immigrants are a huge part of our economy.
Also, it's really hard to become legal. It's a multi stepp[rocess and it requires a lot of money. My friend's fiance is from Wales, and trying to do everything the legal way, but it's been horrible. He's been turned around at the airport, and they've been through a lot trying to "prove" their relationship, and that's an english speaking person with a sponsor.I can't imagine how hard it is for people who don't speak english and don't have someone to help them.
