Just follow all of the instructions they gave you - do not cheat. I ended up with dry socket and it was awful!

When you pucker your lips to suck from a straw you actually put pressure on your gums and teeth--if you have ever had oral surgery and have tried it, you'll know why you can't!!!

Re: Im home and feeling great!
Yay! I was thinking of you today! I told you that you were in great hands with Dr Hottie! I had barely any pain either- but I knew yours was more complicated. Isn't it great when you realize the anticipation was way worse than the actual surgery? When I went back to him for my one week recheck he asked how I was and I told him that I had almost no pain throughout the whole recovery. He goes, "No pain? D@mn I must be losing my touch!" LOL Hot AND witty! Make sure to keep your head elevated when you sleep tonight- don't lie flat. It will prevent bleeding. Hope you continue to feel good!

Because the sucking action can suck out the blood clot that forms in the socket- that blood clot is what keeps air and other particles out of the socket. If you lose that clot before you heal, OUCH!!!!

When you have tooth extracted the area that remains is called a socket, it is basically a hole in your jaw that is open, within a short time a blood clot forms in the socket & sometimes we add a suture or two. If the patient does anything that causes a strong suction in their mouth-like drinking through a straw, smoking, rinsing-it can pull the clot out & leave the jaw bone exposed. It is equivalent to pain you'd have lets say on your thigh if a piece of skin/tissue was missing & all you had was an exposed hole in your femur. It is easily treated but it slows down healing & its VERY painful. Often people that try to over-clean the extraction sites get them too. We call it a dry socket because when the clot falls out the air "dries" the socket out leaving the nerve endings exposed.

i'm so glad it went well... what did you think of Dr. Capuano?
Who you mean Dr. McDreamy ?
I just woke up and it was time for a pain pilll and im hurting a bit now (but nothing unbearable)So I guess the key is constantly taking the meds- whether you think you need it or not..
I drank (with a spoon) a slurpee and a milk shake and it felt so good- I tried having yogurt and it didn't feel as nice...
The Dr had me remove the gauze about 1-2hrs after being home- does that sound about right? I constantly have a bloody taste in my moth and its gross!

Its not unusual for extraction sites to bleed slightly for 24 hours or so. It mixes with your saliva so you end up tasting it. If you are not taking prescription pain meds Advil works much better than tylenol because advil relieves inflamation. The maxium swelling point is 36 hours after the surgery so today is a good day to do a little ice if you feel like you need it. When you brush your teeth today be very careful not to swoosh anything around in your mouth, if you have a lot of saliva & toothpaste in your mouth spit it out VERY gently. Over the next few days when you start eating normal food again, if you feel like food particles are getting in the extraction sites DO NOT try to get it out. The sockets are naturally cleansing. Tomorrow you should start very gentle rinsing. It sounds like you did great, I'm glad you loved your doctor-that always helps!!!! Feel better!

Re: Im home and feeling great!
Stay ahead of the pain. SERIOUSLY. Do NOT wait until you feel more pain to take your pain meds. Take them on whatever schedule they say (3 hours, 4 hours, whatever). If you wait until you feel pain, they will not be as effective.
NO straws.
I ended up with dry socket, so I'm no help there. Just follow the doc's instructions. Dry socket hurt, but the minute the doctor packed it, the pain went away.
