Name some great Suffolk County towns to buy a home in!
What Suffolk County towns would you suggest to buy a home in and why? I don't know much about Suffolk and want to learn more.
Looking for good property upkeep, safe, good property values, good schools, decent sized property, etc. A solid town if possible, not a lot of illegal rentals. A cute downtown is always nice too but not a must.

Do you or your SO have to commute (drive or train) to NYC? Commute out of state? Do you travel and need to be at NYC airports often?
If not, then check out: Head of the Harbor, Nissequoge, St. James

Re: Name some great Suffolk County towns to buy a home in!
I live in Sayville and I love it. It has that cute little town life that I love and have always wanted. The schools are great (some house in sayville are in connetquoit school district--which is still good I think but really big). My property size is 78x178 with taxes at $7400 and it is a 3 bedroom split (about 1300 square feet). It is the town of islip which is great. If you want a little cheaper taxes for the same or more property bayport which is the town right next to sayville also has great schools and a town (not like sayville) but nice just the same and you can always drive into sayville town since they are right next to each other. Both are close to sunrise and are easy to access major highways. It really depends where you work though. My husband works in seaford and his commute is 25 mins and I work in east meadow and my commute is 35-45 mins. If you are commuting every day to the train it is a good hour and forty-five minute commute. Good luck to you.
Other good towns are west islip, east islip (although they sometimes have problems passing their budget), oakdale.

Re: Name some great Suffolk County towns to buy a home in!
My FIL (not from LI) yesterday said "You want to move to Suffolk County? There are a lot of gangs there."
I assume he has been reading something in the paper. Or is that an exaggeration just so we don't move further?

What areas of Suffolk are known for "gangs"? My FIL (not from LI) yesterday said "You want to move to Suffolk County? There are a lot of gangs there."
I assume he has been reading something in the paper. Is this true what he said. I know there are some gangs, but what are the towns that supposedly have a lot of gangs? Or is that an exaggeration just so we don't move further?
There are alot of gangs on long island period then I think you would think there are. As for where in suffolk there are gangs--this is not from any data I have collectded but from what I have heard--amityville, bayshore, are two that come to mind. The towns that were mentioned on this post though to my knowledge do not.
Your FIL might have read that there has been an increase in gangs on long island and specifically in suffolk county but suffolk is very big and there are great towns to live in in suffolk that do not.

Agree!! All these towns are great places to live, raise a family, and have nice safe neighborhoods.

Agree!! All these towns are great places to live, raise a family, and have nice safe neighborhoods. Stony Brook and Northport have the best villages to walk around in. Both these towns are on the water and have cute shops and restaurants to go to. You can get to these villages easily from any of these towns. I live in Smithtown and I go into Stony Brook all the time.

Wow! Interesting comment. I agree with another poster that said the gang population is all over Long Island. I really think you can find gangs anywhere today. But I would go around to neighborhoods and see what you like. That is the only way to tell.

Re: Name some great Suffolk County towns to buy a home in!
well, suffolk is hardly the 'hood....... sure, there are areas that aren't the best, but overall, things are very safe, and similar to nassau. There are many areas where you can leave your car unlocked, and nothing will happen....
That gang comment should be taken with a grain of salt, and sounds really similar to my mom's blanket statement of manhattan, which was left over from the mid-70's.... 'don't take the subway, it's not safe!'

When my FIL said that, I wondered what has he been reading (he reads the paper alot). Mind you, he lives in NJ, not even NY. I am sure he was trying to discourage us from moving further out, further from him, since you all say that is only limited to some areas.
Thanks so much!

Well not to sound ignorant, but other than online news, I really dont read the paper. So when my FIL said that, I wondered what has he been reading (he reads the paper alot). I'm a life-long suffolk-er.... come on out, the water (and beaches) are fine only the taxes are
