I've never heard of it before.
However, I could see where it would make sense if say, the mother of the bride paid for the entire bridal shower. In that case, the bridesmaids might want to give HER a thank you gift for paying for the shower, since they didn't have to.
(I'm one of 4 girls, and my mom paid for all of our showers. She certainly would have appreciated a Thank You along the way, but a gift wasn't necessary).
But other than that, I really can't think of why the bridal party would get a gift for the MOB.

Never heard of it, but mom was REALLY generous to my girls, they should have gotten her something!
She paid for my shower 100% and paid for everyone's makeup the day of and I cant remember what else.

Wow, that was very nice!! I would have give a gift then too.
My mom didn't get a gift from my girls when I got married 5 years ago. She paid for the whole shower...favors and all...
