I'm tired of the judgment!
Yes, we are a little strict with Alex's eating. But you know what? It has had some AMAZING results. Alex is the only child in her entire class who will gobble up an entire bowl of Israeli salad mixed with hummus, while everyone else is eating fish sticks, french toast and chicken nuggets.
Alex is the only child I know who will sit down for dinner, will eat grilled tilapia, with whole wheat couscous and grilled veggies. Happily!
And she's the only child at the birthday party who actually PREFERS fresh fruit over the cake that's always served.
And she's always been in the 95th percentile for height, is trim, fit, STRONG as a freakin' OX, smart as a devil, has more energy than any child I've ever encountered, and hasn't been sick in OVER A YEAR! (Knock on wood).
So, please, everyone, stop telling me to feed my daughter chocolate milk, sugary snacks, yogurt with 40% sugar, water ice, ice cream, etc, all because you think I'm doing a disservice to my daughter.
Yes, she gets treats. But we don't go overboard, and we watch what she eats, and THAT, in my opinion, is a tremendous gift that will live with her for the rest of her life.
I'm tired of defending myself, especially when most of the criticism comes from the unhealthiest people... SO BACK OFF!!!!

Re: I'm tired of the judgment!
People need to back off!! You are doing a wonderful thing for your daughter!!
I get a lot of comments from people because I feed DS healthy foods and drastically limit the "junk" he gets. He is 16 months old!! He doesn't need junk! I hope to have him grow up with better eating habits than I did!!
Sorry I added my own rant

Re: I'm tired of the judgment!
You and I have similar daughters and very similar ways of feeding our children. I get more grief from my family than I can even tell you. Just know that what you're doing is so wonderful for her. (I know you know that!) People freaking suck and just because they don't care if they fill their kids with crap doesn't mean they need to judge you! Ugg. I'm so sick of having this conversation with people, too. I feel your pain!

Same here! I just don't understand! Everyone is simply amazed at how well she eats, and what a varied, healthy diet she has, but then they keep pushing on me that I should give her jelly sandwiches, sugary yogurt, more juice, etc.
Um, hello? Why fix something that ain't broke??

Don't let people get to you! I think its awesome that Alex has that diet. I WISH Bryan would eat like that. He does like some veggies and he LOVES fruit. If I give him chicken nuggets, I sometimes peel all the skin off and give him just the meat.
Alex is a beautiful little girl! Ignore those who make comments.

Re: I'm tired of the judgment!
I admire your kid for eating so healthy, and you for encouraging it!!
My son is NOT a good eater... but sadly, I wasn't the best role model.
Don't get me wrong.. I don't feed him JUNK... but I wasn't strict on the veges (even though I LOVE vegetables)

Re: I'm tired of the judgment!
As someone who is trying to raise a vegetarian, I agree. People ask me all the time about protein, and his development. Anyone who sees my bright brute of a child can see he is getting everything he needs. Cailen hates sweets, and people think I make it up. They only believe me when they see his yuck face when he tastes whatever they try to give him. He gobbled down his brown rice with green peas and soy cheese last night, and couldn't get enough of dessert- nectarine and strawberries. He doesn't eat any of the other stuff the way he eats the healthy stuff!!!!

Re: I'm tired of the judgment!
It happens no matter what. If you don't do things the way that someone else does them, you are going to be judged to some degree. It comes from one place: Insecurity. Judgement is a defense mechanism. Some people assume that your feeding Alex a very healthy and varied diet means that you are judging them for not doing the same. Even if you aren't.
And honestly - if you fed her the typical diet you would be judged for that by other people.
Do what you feel is right for your child and hang in there!

ok I like this plan, how did u do it???
From day one we started introducing healthy food. I pureed all of her babyfood and offered her pureed veggies all the time. I never gave her junky snacks - I always read the labels and make sure there is little to no sugar. For yogurt, I would give her organic, plain yogurt, mixed with organic, unsweetened applesauce.
When she started on solids, I gave her only healthy stuff - fresh veggies, fresh fruit. If I gave her sweets, it was always something I baked, so I could control the ingredients and make sure there were no icky preservatives in it.
I won't lie, it's a major pain in the arse, and we've been getting heat about it from EVERYONE since day one, and I've been on the defensive for as long as I can remember.
But the results are truly amazing. It's really just about letting them acquire a "taste" for healthy food. Eventually, if they start liking it, they will favor that over other stuff. Even if she rejected things I gave her, I'd try it up to 10, 15 times until she started liking it.
And I NEVER gave in to her little tantrums. If she didn't want to eat what I gave her for a snack, for breakfast, lunch or dinner, no negotiations, I wouldn't make something else for her. If she was hungry enough, she'd eat what I serve her.
