Im totally freaking out- daycare

I am so at a loss and cant explain how upset and parinoid about going back to work...I need some advice. My DD will only be 10 weeks when she goes. My mom is watching her 3 days thank goodness...but those other two are freaking me out. At first I said no to tutor time in Smithtown because I thought it would be too impersonal. Then I found a friend of his families who does daycare at her house...but she has alot of kids and only her (she said she takes up to 6). I agreed to her, but now after having DD I know how much attention she needs. She dosent nap in cribs..only in your arms or swing...so how is she going to nap at ANY daycare!Chat Icon And you have to recognize shes sleepy and begin soothing or she gets overtired and cranky.
just lots of demnds...but shes a newborn and I do them because Im her MOM. I dont think anyone is going to give 1/2 this much attention and it
KILLS me. I just continuously cry over this and Im not going back until feb 11thChat Icon
If anyone has any advice please help me. Has anyone experienced tutor time or know of anyone who watches children in the smithtown area?
Would you prefer tutor time or this woman who works out of her home?

My personal choice would be Tutor Time. I didn't consider home-care when we were looking at daycares.

Re: Im totally freaking out- daycare

Personally I prefer in home daycare at that age...but that's just me...

I remember being a first time mom...and I felt the exact same way you do...and you're right, you are mom and you know best, BUT...

Your baby will amaze you at how much she will be able to adapt to a new atmosphere...babies are always different with their parents than with others...she will adjust. She will have different habits at daycare than her habits at home because she will need to..it may take a week, but it will happen.

It could wind up being a blessing...you may like the new habits she develops being away from home (napping in a crib/pack and play)...

They may even have a swing there or you can bring a travel one and she can nap in there if need be.

The only thing i would be a little worried about is her taking care of 6 children by herself - that seems like a lot to me.

This is actually an EXCELLENT point...I didn't notice that when I first read your post...

Especially with a 10 week old...

I perfer in home day care at that age but not with 6 other kids. I think you would be probably better off at Tutor Time where there are more staff. Chat Icon

Why not look for in home care? Get a p/t nanny. I have a nanny and LOVE her to death and she LOVES me children.

You can use a service that will match you. I was lucky enough to find mine on my own and then ran my own background checks. You can also check with friends, church, neighbors, etc.

I prefer a daycare center because I like the structure and all the eyes watching. However, you have to make the right decision for you and your family. Since your DD is already getting in-home care from your mom 3 days a week, I think a a center might be a nice complement.

Re: Im totally freaking out- daycare

I have been with both a private babysitter and a day care.

I'm a little concerned about the person with 6 children and just herself to watch over them all. My day care told me that they were required by law to have 2 babies to 1 adult, which is why she puts a limit as to how many babies she takes (she has 3 including DD, 12 children total).

Tutor Time was actually my first choice of day care but the one near me didn't have any availability when I looked at it. I felt that it had a very structured environment which may feel 'cold' to some, but to me I thought it was well organized.

I believe in my heart that people who work in day care centers do so because they love children. The ones I have met personally all seem to - as they should!

I also think your DD will adapt better than you think she will. They won't let her cry all day! I was nervous about DD when we made the transition but she adapted pretty quickly and now gets very excited in the morning when I drop her off.

Re: Im totally freaking out- daycare

This is such a hard decision. I have experienced family watching my child. a Large Center and a small group day care.

By far I preferred a Small group day care. I found a happy medium of a more intimate enviroment, but some structure.
You have to visit places and decide what will be comfortable for you. It's a hard decision, but your child will adjust, and it will work out okay.Chat Icon

Re: Im totally freaking out- daycare

I went to see the Tutor Time in College Point, Queens and liked it alot. It seemed like the children were happy and I liked that they allow walk-in tours. They didn't that we were coming so what we saw was what an actual day looked like.

I am going to hire the wife of my husband's co-worker until April. She has been a nanny for several years and has a two year old daughter who seems happy and well-adjusted. since we only need 6 hours a day this is cheaper for us but we are keeping tutor time as an alternative.

I agree with your concerns. I also spoil my little baby and pick him up when he makes the slightest noise, but I also think that some new exposure to people may make him more independent.

I will probably writing the same post soon -- I'll be going back to work on the 26th Chat Icon

Re: Im totally freaking out- daycare

I've had experience with large daycare, home-based center and family.

When they are young my preference is family and/or home-based daycare with no more than 3 kids to each adult. Once they are 18 months to 2 years, I wanted my kids to be in a larger center that was more structured.

Re: Im totally freaking out- daycare

6 kids for one person seems like A LOT. I'm not even sure if that's legal? Is she registered? I would probably go with Tutor Time or find another home care provider.

Re: Im totally freaking out- daycare

I have had experience with both the babysitter and small home-based daycare. The babysitter took 4 kids and just herself. He was well taken care of but found he was put in the packnplay a lot and a little unrealiable (long story) and wasn't a fan of that. I moved him to a small center -8 kids (infant upto 2.5)- 3 adults. And I absolutely love it. The center caters to teacher's children and runs on a school schedule so not for everyone. I am expecting another in april and am highly considering them both going their in sept. (my only drawback is financial, center is about $2G a month for both and not sure if can swing, and we can't live on DH salary unfortunately).

Idea is to call your local nursery schools (that don't take infants/daycare) and see if they have any suggestions, they helped me find my first caregiver and usually can help you find someone.

Re: Im totally freaking out- daycare

Honestly, as a SEIT and a parent I have had experience with several different daycares. I have to say that I do not think parents realize what goes on when they walk out the door. My first child was in a large daycare, but since I have had more experience with large daycares I now have my dd in a small home daycare and could not be happier with our experience. I was lucky to get several references so I fully trust my provider. I would never let my children go back to a large daycare again. That is not to say that some are not good, just that some are really bad and parents don't know. Is your provider licensed? Does she have references? My provider takes up to five. 1 to 5 is usually the smallest license I think. (That's including an infant who counts as two children.)

I work in a daycare right now and my heart breaks for those children. Its like having a fulltime job with a boss and there just little munchkins. In front of the parents its a different story.

I agree 100% My sister taught daycare for a long time and really got me feeling confident about it. I felt the way you do now when I was getting ready to go back to work, and I was sooo worried about the teachers not showing DS as much personal attention as I did, but he has been there since Sept, and I have only wonderful things to say about it! Remember, these teachers only work with babies because they choose to so they are all great with them. I love the structure, the interaction with other babies, the fun learning activities and learning toys available to them...I could go on and on.

My first week as a daycare mommy, I was a wreck...now I LOVE having DS there! He wouldn't sleep in their cribs at first either, but after sleeping in the swings and bouncy seats for a little while, he got into the swing of things and now naps well in his crib there. They have portacribs on wheels and keep the babies in motion sometimes until they fall asleep to help them drift off the way a car ride would - I think that is great!
