here's the general rule re: dealing w/ the Catholic Church -

If you 'donate' enough money, they'll let you have Jewish Godparents if you want to !!

I'd fight them on it, it's absolutely ridiculous

What is ridiculous? It makes perfect sense what the issue is. Why would they allow a Catholic not in good standing-stand up to be a Godparent? The purpose of a Godparent is to make sure the child is being raised in the Catholic faith. It is a shame that he has not made his confirmation, but the rule is not ridiculous to those who believe in what it stands for.

ITA.. and not to start a riot but im a lil offended by the donation comments..."donations to the church" is in the bible people...its called tithing... i never understand how people can spend 25k on a wedding, 2 k on a Christening party, and then be upset the church asks for a donation for their services..

as far as your situation goes, maybe he could just be considered a "sponsor"? In my parish, you may have one Godparent, and one sponsor..

I sort of agree... if you don't attend church, and you don't participate in the maintenance of that church (through your donations)... then how can you be a member of that church?

The church isn't about money, but it does take money to not only keep up the church but the mission of the church. After the federal government, the Catholic Church is the biggest provider of social services in America! It's sort of insulting when people insinuate that it's "all about money"...

ITA. No one complains when the catering hall charges $300 for a ceremony fee. I think a lot of people forget the purpose of the christening is more than a reason to have a big party. (I mean in general not to OP)

Re: In a god-parent pickle .....

It all depends on your church!!! My best friend got married in a catholic church without all her saraments and from what I know you're supposed to have all your sacraments in order to get married. It all depends how strict they are...Good luck whata stinky situation...

*I* think it's ridiculous. The Catholic Church changes it's rules all the time. - Some Churches allow certain things, some do not, etc etc. - And *I* don't believe you have to attend church and donate 10% of your salary (Or whatever it is they 'request' b/c I honestly don't know) in order to be a 'good Catholic' -
Catholic in good standing according to who? The Vatican? Have you been to the Vatican? I have, and it made me absolutely sick to see the EXTREME WEALTH of the Catholic Church .....
*I* think it's ridiculous b/c I don't believe God is counting how much money I donated to the church, and I don't think God would care if the child's Godfather wasn't confirmed ........

That's JMO, and I feel strongly about it - I didn't mean to offend anyone and I apologize if I did. -

Your opinion is valid. God didn't create all these religions people did.The hypocrisy of the Catholic religion is on every level, starting with the parishioners. Everyone picks and chooses which rules to follow.People who don't like the rules should find a different type of church.
The church is not tallying up the envelopes to see if you gave enough but rather to see if you actually attend church. DHs grandmother went to church everyday and never gave more than $10 on Sunday. The church considered her a member in good standing. I have not heard of anyone receiving a letter from the Catholic Church telling them that their contributions weren't enough.

Envelopes are the only way a church can determine whether or not you attend mass. It does not matter how much you give. In MY opinion the Catholic church is much more open minded regarding donations than any Synagogue or Protestant church that I am familiar with. You can't even GO to services in a synagogue unless you pay a set membership fee. The same with many protestant churches I know of-where you have to "rent" your pew. The Catholic church you give what you can. Obviously you have an issue with money, it is too bad you can't get past that to enjoy all the Catholic faith has to offer. I have been to the Vatican, I was in awe of the beauty and humbled by the history of the entire city. I was focused on my faith during that visit, not on my wallet or anyone else's.

And "I" believe God would care whether or not a Catholic Godparent was confirmed in the very religion he is promising to teach and pass on to a new member of the faith. But that is just MY opinion.

to the OP, sorry about the hijack

I'm not going to get into a religous debate with you -
You choose to believe what you do, and I do the same. I am not trying to be offensive -
It doesn't mean I have 'issues' with money - Whatever that means ......??
I don't believe a person has to attend mass to be a member of the Catholic faith -
If you enjoy attending mass for whatever reason, that is wonderful for you - But I do not believe sitting in Church for an hour a week makes anyone a 'good catholic' - and I don't believe in donating to the Church after having seen what I did at the Vatican.
I am not denying it was beautiful and humbling ......but it was also extravegant and unnecessary IMO - It had the opposite affect on me that it did on you.

Regardless, you can't deny that every church has different 'rules' regarding sacraments, marrying in the church, baptizing your child in the church etc etc - I still feel it's ridiculous to deny a Catholic man the right to be a Godparent to a child b/c he did not recieve one of the sacraments .
