In case people think "Mean Girls" don't happen in real life
Remember the movie "Mean Girls" with Lindsay Lohan?
Remember the clique, and the stupid rules they had?
Well, my stepdaughter Devin received a call from a real life plastic from her school. Recruiting her!
She was informed that she and a friend of hers are invited to be a part of their clique, because they are pretty and dress cool, and they think they would be a good fit (these are 12 year olds, btw...)
BUT, they must adhere to the rules:
They can only wear Abercrombie, and a few other limited variety of labels, carry a certain bag, wear their hair a certain way, etc....
Can you believe that???
And Devin, who in the past had a strong desire to be popular and with the in crowd turned her down!!!!
she said, no thank you - I have my friends and we wear what we like when we like, or something along those lines. I was so proud of her!!!!
Isn't that crazy???

This is what scares me about raising a child today. Thank goodness she was smart and secure enough to say NO!

WAY to go for your daughter!! You must be so proud of her!! I really am. I thought she was saying she is joining - but the fact that she said no shows how much she has grown lately - especially self esteem wise and emotionally. DH and I always talk very openly about not following others and how the labels may be fun to wear, but not what makes the person - and it seems like she took it to heart....

My oldest ds is 12 and the girls in his school are soooooooo mean to each other!! They dress like they are at least 16 & so trashy(imo)!! Good for her for standing up for herself and wanting to be her own person!! The girls at ds school all have the same bag, boots, etc-so lame!

Being as tall as I am, and a size 00 certainly helped with the recruiting process as well....

I would have done the same thing she did, then still wear those clothes (well, if it was stuff I liked). I guess that would be my way of letting them know that it was not about having to wear the clothes, it was about having to hang with them!!!!!!!!
Good for her!!!!

Good for her!!!! She does wear all the clothes, which is why they sought her out - so it really was a blow to them because they prob. thought they were such hot shlt that of COURSE she would join.
Ugh middle school....

It is very sad that these "Mean Girls" do exist. But as a person that has taught at the middle school and high school level, I will tell you that the mean girls do exist. It is very sad!

What is even more scary is I bet that girl's mother who gave your SD the call doesn't even see anything wrong with that!

What is even more scary is I bet that girl's mother who gave your SD the call doesn't even see anything wrong with that! If she even knew about it. A lot of these kids don't have much supervision due to FT working parents. They are home a lot on their own, as is my stepdaughter, unfortunately.

Ha Ha I remember those days! We all had to have Jordache jeans and blue mascara!! The girl that called her must have been totally shocked that she said "no thank you"!! She sounds like she has plenty of her own friends and doesn't need to be with the mean ones!!
