Re: In France, Breast is not Best
I just think it's another POV .......
Personally in THIS country, in OUR hospitals I feel that BFing is shoved down your throat like you're a horrible, terrible person for not doing it - Even in every freakin' child care book I picked up ...........they all started the formula feeding section w/ "Breastmilk is best for your baby, but if you choose not do blah blah blah" ........
So, there it's the opposite -
I'm not saying EITHER is right .......

I didn't have that experience in my hospital at all. In fact I was one of maybe 3 or 4 new moms breastfeeding, because DS was kept separate in the BF baby and his "box" marked with a sign "BF baby, no bottles, no pacifiers, no sugar water" It was a little weird, but I can see why if so many are FF.
The BF support the hospital gave was minimal. I had to pay for the hospital LC to visit me more than once. One nurse told me I wont be able to BF with my flat nipples.
Anything ever printed about feeding a newborn, says "breast milk is best" because AAP says it. And if they don't print it, they are discredited.
I don't have an opinion on whats best, I think every mommy should have a choice, its just sad when a mommy feels like she isn't given one.

I think he wrote it that way saracastically. Like to poke fun at their attitudes there. At the end it says his DD his breastfed at 17 months, etc...

Re: In France, Breast is not Best
I don't care that the french don't like breastfeeding. or that they have in extremely stupid fashion, blamed themselves and the bonds with their children for their husbands philandering. It doesn't bother me that they think keeping their boobies in fine condition will keep their mates only wanting that set (b/c it stands to reason that ALL breasts in France are quite lovely, and therefore, quite lovable, no? oui. )
what bothers me to the extreme is that breastfeeding is being REMOTELY associated with what these people did to their baby. that makes me ill.
that poor poor innocent. may you rest in peace.

Re: In France, Breast is not Best
What a load of propaganda BS!!!!!!
1/ The author is British = British and French do not like each other. Articles are biased on this "untold" hatred.
2/ It is true that French women are NOT BFing their children. The rate is only about 50%.
Why? It's hard to say. It's not the hate of BFing but more of education. BFing is just not promoted for mothers. The minute to give birth, convenience is promoted by the nurses, etc... My mom never BFd. You were only told to BF if you had a premature baby.
3/ While the medical support is great in France, BFing is just not promoted or supported.
I think it's more the medical staff who does no support it vs mothers who don't want to do it.
There is no "idealist" vision of beauty in a PG woman. BFing is just not seen as a beautiful thing.
BFing pump are usually only rented also. It's not as available as here for purchase.
But at the same time, while people may BASH France for not promoting BFing, they also allow ALL working mothers (regardless of your job) to have a 12 weeks maternity leave fully paid. All new moms get a "bonus" from the FED for giving birth. My sister gets "sick days" for her children. FMLA is 3 YEARS. Mothers who just gave birth stay in hospital longer to make sure they are OK.
ETA: BTW French women AND men do not put that much importance in breasts like in the US. A small chested woman is not seen as unattractive. They don't rush to a plastic surgeon in shame. French men care about the size of their a$$ vs the size of their breasts. So the argument to save their breast for their DH is such bull also.

Re: In France, Breast is not Best
I found the article funny and read some parts of it to my co-workers. I have some of the same feelings about breastfeeding, maybe it's the French influence in me.
I will be breasfeeding DS until 6 months, regardless.

I was totally discouraged from BF'ing my PREEMIES in my hospital... I wish it was shoved down my throat. I actually had to e-mail 2 local La Leche League leaders 2 days after I gave birth on Thanksgiving night to get some advice sinc ethe NICU nurses would give them formula before I could hobble down there with pumped milk

Re: In France, Breast is not Best
Wow, I too would have thought France to be pro BFing.
As for my own experience in the hospital, I feel like they were shoving BF AND FF in my face. I had 2 different LCs come in to see me and make sure I was doing OK/offer tips/assure me that I was providing enough to my son, yet some of the nurses kept asking if I was sure I didn't want to supplement with formula until my milk came in. I was glad that I had read some stuff about BFing and so I had some knowledge going into it, otherwise I think I may have been confused and concerned that I wasn't providing enough to DS. (sorry for the run on...hard to focus on grammar while trying to balance sleeping baby )

I agree, I wont even consider anything in such a biased, hateful and dripping with sarcasm article as any valid POV. Such propoganda. Regardless of what women in France CHOOSE TO DO WITH THEIR OWN BABY, that article was such a crock.

Re: In France, Breast is not Best
Actually- in the comments after the article someone said that the article was a lot of propoganda- that the parents were accused of not caring for the child properly. Don't know if it is true
"The couple did not follow the doctor's advice to take the baby to hospital when they went for her nine-month checkup and found she was suffering from bronchitis and was losing weight," he said. Instead they treated her with cabbage poultices, mustard and camphor and washed her with earth and clay instead of giving her baths, the court heard.
The commenter said, "This has nothing to do with breasts, but even broadsheet editors know that breasts sell stories"

Sophie! That is simply not true. This is the 21st Century and that old French/British BS does not hold true anymore. It might have years ago, but not anymore. The author of this article if Irish anyway, based in Paris.
The Guardian is the middle class, liberal newspaper, its not a tabloid, its reputable and I think, a brilliant read. The article is so confusing, it appears to be written quite tongue in cheek, which just confuses a quite serious issue.
It seems to be a POV article written by the Guardians Arts Correspondent, but the article about the baby who died is sad. It has little to do with breastfeeding and more about a poor baby whose parents ignored advice by a healthcare professional.

Honestly, our culture is seriously schizophrenic on this issue and it makes it hard for everyone. On the one hand, people say breast is best, but if you dare put a baby to your breast -- unless you are in complete isolation -- somehow you're going to offend somebody, somewhere. And the hospitals may tell you "breast is best" but they send you home with a bag full of formula. What message does that send? It makes it so hard for mothers and it's so unfair.
