In Home Daycare Provider Taking Kids Out of House
How would you feel if your in home day care provider took the kids she cared for, including yours, out to pick up other kids from school, or to the library or park?

She wouldn't be my daycare provider! I personally would not be comfortable with that

Re: In Home Daycare Provider Taking Kids Out of House
Fine, I had my son with a Childminder for about a year and I loved the fact that he was in and out of her home all the time, they went to playgroups, to the supermarket, to the school run to get the other kids, to indoor playgrounds, McDonalds for lunch. He loved it.
If you don't trust your childminder to take your kid out of the house, you might want to think about a daycare centre.

I'm surprised she does that. It seems like she's opening herself up to huge liability here. God forbid a kid gets injured in a car accident, or one gets separated/lost from her, etc.
I would never allow this with my DC.

Re: In Home Daycare Provider Taking Kids Out of House
I am a licensed in-home provider...
We are actually encouraged by our licensing agency to take the children on local field trips ( library, supermarket, mailroom, firehouse etc...)
Parents must always be notified and permission slips must be filled out...Proper transportation methods must be used and a contact # to reach the provider...
This should have been something that was discussed at contract ...
As far as picking up her own children at the bus-stop...very common
Many in-home providers are moms, and again- this is something that needs to be mutually agreed on in advance..Same goes for providers who do after-care for schoolage children..Very common as well..
Its something that the parent must be comfortable with however or perhaps it is not a suitable arrangement

Re: In Home Daycare Provider Taking Kids Out of House
is she/he walking and not taking a car? I take care of a friend's son and when it was nice I tried to get out every day! I hate that we havent gone out in months since he is here! We would walk...no car, but even if it is to the nearby park or to the mailbox with my kiddies bikes - it was something to break up the day! I couldnt imagine being expected to stay in all day!

Re: In Home Daycare Provider Taking Kids Out of House
My ds goes to sn inhome dc. While filling out all paperwork, there was one for outside trips. Local parks, walks etc. I have no problem with it. If its nice out and they want to go to the park, that is fine with me. Her backyard has pretty much everything in it already, so i knew it wouldnt be an issue. They do do walks around the neighborhood in the warmer months. Taking him on the belt pkwy, i dont hink so, but library and park. Im fine with it.

Re: In Home Daycare Provider Taking Kids Out of House
My provider does that. She drops off other kids at nursery school and takes my DS with her. During nicer weather, she takes the kids, via stroller and with help, to the park nearby. I have no problem with it. But I will add, she didn't do this with him until he was forward facing because those are the car seats she has in her mini van.

Re: In Home Daycare Provider Taking Kids Out of House
my last job was taking care of 2 kids (4 &7) and i would pick them up from school, go to the library. mcdonald, the park, supermarket etc even during the summer we would go to the pool. I had written permition from the parents and the kids where good at following rules. The parents really trust me and at the same time gave me the "power" to give time out etc which allow me more control over the kids. I adore those kids and I am glad I was able to do so much with them.

I have mymy son in a In-home daycare and what is described here is true.
I actually do not mind if she takes DS to the library, or to pick up her kids from school or go with him to the bus stop. She always checks in with me even though I signed the consent form. I trust her completely with DS...if I didn't he wouldn't be there.

yes, yes and about 3 two year olds, a 4 mth old - my ds is 10 mths old and we haven't decided on whether we're going with this particular IHDCP just yet.
Bops - thanks for the info. I did not know it's encouraged by the licensing agency to do this.
I thought that perhaps it's because i'm a new mom --- the nerves about my baby going out in public with 4 other babies and being watched by someone who is watching three other little ones. I think about the risk factors...of course....but mostly it's because i'm not there to watch him.
Even thought about if it were a close friend or my mom...with three other kids and an newborn...no, i suppose not.
Or maybe i'm being overprotective? This is all so new to me.
It does seem to be a preferential thing. Either you're ok with it or not so much. hrm.

Re: In Home Daycare Provider Taking Kids Out of House
My DS' provider does this - in fact, I found a double stroller on Craigslist for $10 to make her life easier! I love that she takes him out - they go to the park, down main street, etc. I am NOT OK with him being driven anywhere, but I don't mind the stroller walks one bit.
(She only watches my son and 1 other child, 10 mos older than him)

Re: In Home Daycare Provider Taking Kids Out of House
You are very welcome .....
Given the scenario you are describing and the ages mentioned, I myself "personally" would not take a group of that age range on a "field trip" without an assistant . However I do have a buggy stroller that accomodates 4 children and would go on nature walks and things of the kind...
I do not think you are being overprotective and actually I think that its great that you are sorting out your feelings on this before enrolling him...You may feel differently about it when he is a bit older also- it is all very new to you right now...Good luck

Re: In Home Daycare Provider Taking Kids Out of House
Its scary. No bones about it.
But at the same time it is wonderful. My dd started in daycare at a year and it was a hard decision to allow this. But I just knew I found a wonderful provider and I had to give it a shot. I got my dd a great car seat and checked it after it was installed. I used to worry all the time, but I was right my daughter has an amazing provider. They take classes at the museum and library. I love that my daughter gets out. She is learning so much and really loving life. m Experiencing the world. It makes me sad sometimes that I am not apart of her world as intensely as I was with my son, but I am glad to know that my provider takes her to all the places I would if I was not working. I must admit, it was hard to know that she had library teachers and music classes that I never got to be apart of...I must admit. I did not even know the teacher's name!
Three years later I am happy with my decision to allow my provider to drive my daughter. She is happy. I don't worry anymore...blocked it out. It gets easier to let go. I still occasionally check the car seats though.
ETA: I was the paranoid mom of the century so this was a huge step for me. I do not always know where my daughter is. I honestly don't but I love my provider and so does she so I fully trust that she is caring for her properly. I have to trust or I would not do this. She lives in my neighborhood and I have driven by her and seen her driving my daughter. In the beginning I would go in hot pursuit just to see. But I now trust.
Once I drove down the road coming home from work and saw this group of kids skipping down the street with their mom...except it wasn't their mom. It was my kid with her provider having a blast. I had to grin. Presently my provider has 3 three year old girls and two 1 yr olds.
I am part-time with flexible hours so I can spy.

same here. I'm nervous enough driving my DS around.. I definitely wouldn't let someone else do it!

Re: In Home Daycare Provider Taking Kids Out of House
sweety - honestly, if i trust her to care for my daughter in her own home....i trust her to take her places. I provided a car seat for her and in the summer/spring, i've picked Em up at the park, or met them at one for lunch...
i love that she's not just sitting inside all the time!

Same here - as long as long as she okays it with me beforehand I have no problem. I would prefer for my DD to be out and about.

Re: In Home Daycare Provider Taking Kids Out of House
Thanks so much for all your thoughtful responses. Reading both sides has helped me gain a fresh perspective, and finally a decision that i'm more comfortable with.
I think the biggest hurdle for me personally was the daily drive, twice a day to pick up siblings of the younger toddlers there. The adults to tots ratio, and the extra job of picking kids up is what I wasn't completely comfortable with.
I have another IHDCP I'm in the process of getting to know. She does take the kids out, but mostly for walks to the area park. She doesn't have any other obligations to focus on besides watching 3 other kids aged 2-4, so my ds would make 4, and that number makes me a tad more comfortable at this age.
It's a 'deep-breath, heavy sigh' kinda thing for me, and I'm glad to have read every single one of your posts.

Re: In Home Daycare Provider Taking Kids Out of House
I had a nanny but didn't let her drive my kids around (they were not in school yet). I just didn't feel comfortable being at work and worrying about crazy drivers - I worry enough when they are in the car with me! However I did let her take them outside for walks in the stroller, or out in the backyard to play, or in the summer she could walk a few blocks to the park.

Re: In Home Daycare Provider Taking Kids Out of House
When I was PG I interviewed a few in-home providers. I remember one lady said, well I have a minivan and a carseat, so I would be taking the baby out every day to pick my daughter up from HS (which was 10 miles away on a very busy road). That made up my mind for me - my DH and I were just not comfortable with someone else driving our baby somewhere every day. And who knows where else she would go - I just didn't like the idea of it. So we went with a daycare center. My DS is in one place all day and I like knowing where he is.

Re: In Home Daycare Provider Taking Kids Out of House
I forgot to mention that my daycare provider does have two older children and occasionally does take my dd on errands. I deal with that cause she is treated as a part of their family.
