In lieu of....
In lieu of, in my mind, means instead of. "In lieu of flowers the family is asking for donations to XYZ charity...."
Right?
Lately I have been seeing it used wrong- but not just by one person- I have seen it a few times used like this:
"In lieu of National Dog Day, here is a picture of my dog, Max!"
"In lieu of the first day of school coming up, here is a list of places that have great prices on school supplies"
Is it just that there a lot of people out there with no grasp of how to use this phrase? Because now I am questioning myself!

Those people are idiots. In lieu of means in place of or instead of.
It’s not you, it’s them.

LOL I thought so. I even googled it to make sure I wasn't losing my brain. I guess with the advent of social media you get to see people's misuse of the English language a lot more than you would in the past. It's cringe worthy sometimes.

I am thinking that is what they are going for- and are just using the wrong phrase. It's just strange because I have seen it a few times by different people.

These stories crack me up. I rarely go on FB and when I do it’s fairly normal stuff like pics of vacations and babies. If I were FB friends with these other people I’d have to block all of them.

You don't know how tempting it is to reply with: ....do you mean "in light of"? Especially on one of my really bitchy, bad mood days. It's just fascinating the misuse of the English language that I see on a daily basis on social media

Please do reply with the correct response. Drives me nuts when the English language is misused. Just yesterday I corrected DH when he said orthopedic instead of orthopedist. It finally got under my skin.

In lieu of punching someone in the face, I poured myself a glass of wine tonight. True story.

Re: In lieu of....
Oh man, it would be hard for me to shut my mouth on that one...
I actually got a complaint from a student that I corrected too much. A major part of the exam they were taking was speaking with correct grammar. It was the first complaint I got that said that. Usually they may complain about not enough correction. Oh well.

Omg, this is so funny. Do you see it on Facebook? I swear, if I had FB, I think it would just be for the comedy factor. Just laughing at how dumb people are.

I completely agree! A friend posted an ISO postcards for her daughter for a project her class was doing. I was appalled that this poorly written letter was done by the teacher, and I said so. I couldn't hold it in!! It was completely atrocious and if that was my kid's teacher, I would have been on the phone ASAP to them to demand an explanation.

hahaha I think that people have always been dumb. they just have a public platform now, and get to display it more easily by writing. People can get away with so much when just communicating verbally.
