That doesn't seem fair at all since they still have the class in the building. I wonder if the newly classified students are assigned to that school as their home school, and if that makes them get priority placement there over others? I would call the Superintendent.

I did and I'm very sad to say he hasn't reached out to me. I was told by the 2 people who made the decision that they spoke to him. After my meeting I intend to reach out to him and request a meeting since I find this unacceptable. My dd cries every night before bed. They ruined our end of summer, crushed her little heart and my dh and I won't forget or get over this anytime soon. The principal at her new school is amazing, has called me 2 times to check in on her, and let us tour the building at 5 oclock on Friday. I'm very thankful he seems like a good principal who is very caring for his students. My issue is that the administration in my district does not care about my daughter or the other 3 kids lives they uprooted.

I'm in the field too and understand that it technically is not ILLEGAL, however as a parent, I feel it is certainly wrong, heartbreaking and incredibly unfair. I wonder what if you went to the media. I would think about calling Newsday to see if they will pick up the story, if you are open to that. Are you in contact with the other affected families? Maybe some bad publicity will make the district rethink their decision.

3/4 are furious. The other parent was initially upset but their child is handling it well and they are on board now. I've thought of going to the Media but I'd rather not drag my DD through that. I want my district to apologize to us, I want them to promise me that they will let my DD graduate from her new school. I have no trust in them, no faith that they will do the right thing. They have showed their true colors and they care about one thing and one thing only... Money.

Is the class still available in the school your daughter was attending and they are just moving her for space reasons? If that is the case, call the superintendent and the head of special ed and tell them they do not have your permission to move her. Move the kids that were just classified. You need to call the school immediately monday morning and don't stop calling until you speak to the person in charge. Not a secretary or assistant sup.

If they are moving the inclusion class as a whole to a new school then unfortunately they are legally able to do that. They can move you anywhere in district that is housing the program. We just had to move my daughter in 4th grade for the same reason. It sucked but legally nothing I could do unless I wanted to give up her services.

Yes there is still a co-lab class in the school she attended last year. They just took 4 kids out of it and moved them to another building. Trust me I fought like crazy, I called and emailed everyone I could think of and was told that unless I want to put her back into a gen ed class we had to move to the new school. Even if I put her in a gen ed class she would still have to move schools and go back to her home school which isn't the school she was in. I'm FED up with my district. They are always talking about how they are a community, how they are leaders in special education. Its all a LIE. They care about money and these kids are just a number to them.

You need to go in person and sit there until the superintendent talks to you. Unless they are changing the program in the school there is no reason why they are pulling your child out. Calling and emailing alone will do nothing. You need a face to face. It is unfortunate but sometimes you really need to be a biotch to get what you want for your daughter. Being a special needs parent sucks. You have the final say in what program your child is in and never ever agree to anything that you are not comfortable with. If they are claiming there are too many IEP kids in the class they can file a variance with the state. Districts do it all the time.

I am so sorry to hear this.. It breaks my heart what some of our kids, who need the stability the most, have to go through.. It sounds like you are in a big district? A few of my friends in the bigger districts have gone thru the same thing. I am in a small district and I remember a lot of people telling me I may not be happy with the special ed programs at a smaller school.. and that couldn't be further than the truth. My district has done a lot for us and because we only have one elementary school in the district - I don't have to worry about the switching of schools for placement. Of course, if they don't offer a certain type of class you can be placed out of district but for the most part they have lots of options for placement within the school. I hope your daughter loves the new school and has a great year!

Call news12. Have them call the superintendent. Maybe the bad press will help get their ass in gear and they wont do it next year

I'm so sorry this is happening to your daughter. I wonder if you could have a therapist see your daughter and make the argument that this constant moving around is detrimental to your daughter's mental health.

If you ever do decide to relocate to a different district, we are in Island Trees and I've heard from people in the county that it's a desirable district for special education. There's only one school per grade level so you wouldn't risk being bounced around. Just something to keep in the back of your mind.

No its not the home school for any of the 4 kids. 3 out of the 4 kids including my daughter all have the same home school but they didn't choose that school either. This was to save money pure and simple. They had a co-lab class set up in this other building and shipped 4 kids out so they didn't have to pay an additional gen ed and special ed teacher.

This is awful! I know it's all a numbers game for the admin and ultimately comes down to money, but these are the kids who would most benefit from the consistency of the same school and friends. So disappointing for your dd and you. Chat Icon No real advice, unfortunately I don't think there is much an advocate or attorney can do the district is well within their legal rights. Just to cover your bases try LIAC
Good Luck!

I am sorry this happened to your DD. I used an advocate who is very good. She is also expensive but worth it. If you want her name let me know.
