in your honest decorating opinion.....
i have wanted to do a chair rail in the nursery since finding out i was PG... since then ive realized how tiny bedroom really is, and every time i think of the chairrail i feel like it makes the room have a smaller appearance...
anyones view on this?
i feel like what im planning on doing now, is going for one wall of color where the crib will be against... and the other three walls a very light ivory/pale beige..the colored wall will be large vertical stripes of the same color, but alternating between high gloss and flat enamel finishes...(i think theres another poter on this site who did this with the chair rail on the botoom half...maybe stefanie?)
does this make sense? Whatdya think?

Re: in your honest decorating opinion.....
well, a chair rail will make the ceiling feel lower... not necessarily the room smaller.... especially if it's the same color as the walls.
the vertical stripes, however... I think that would make the room feel smaller... as would painting an accent wall.
I've been living small for almost a decade now... I have numerous tricks for making a tiny room spacious.
rule #1 is one color for the walls... When we moved into our current apartment, we got a great deal on rent but received it 'as is'... we had to fix up the walls. the guy before us had several accent walls and it made the place look so small and dark. we painted everything a soft neutral grey and it made everything look so much less cluttered and brighter.
Rule# 2 is try to get low profile furniture when possible. A low long bookcase will make the room more airy than a smaller / taller bookcase.
Rule #3 don't buy overscaled furniture The super poofy glider or the huge dresser will make you feel clustrophobic.
Rule #4 avoid displaying too much, becuase it will begin to feel less cute and more cluttered.
HTH!

Re: in your honest decorating opinion.....
thank you so much for your reply!! as far as the furniture, it is WAY huge..but ill only be in this house for another year at most, thank goodness...
my son right now, is in the room, with a twin bed, a toy chest, and a large dresser...
so i think the crib and the one dresser im doing will be ok, im just concerned about that paint...i was wondering that too about the vertical lines, but someone else told me they give a long appearance? lol i dunno.. i kinda agree with what you are saying though..

Re: in your honest decorating opinion.....
yeah, I think the general rule of thumb is:
vertical = long = makes ceiling higher but wall length shorter
horizontal = wide = makes walls look longer but ceiling lower
and accent walls will chop-up a room... which is great if it's a large room you want to visually divide into 2, but not so great if you have a smaller room.

Re: in your honest decorating opinion.....
we're doing a chair rail but the room we're using is actually way toooo big for a nursery...we did the stripes with high gloss and low in our living room and its VERY subtle, some ppl don't even notice....as for alternating stipe colors with ur funiture I don't think it goes..but I do like the high gloss low gloss idea
