incompetent cervix
I am 23 weeks. At 20 weeks I went in for my level 2 and all was great but baby was camera shy and we couldn't see the sex. I went back 1 week later and found out I was having a GIRL!! And also my cervix was opening. I went straight to Winthrop for an emergency cerclage (stitching of the cervix). I've been on bed rest ever since. Anyone else on bedrest or experiencing incompetent cervix too? How dangerous is it?

Re: incompetent cervix
I have cervical issues but have never had it diagnosed as incompetent. I usually wind up on bedrest at around 20-24 weeks and stay there until 35 weeks...my last pregnancy I was fortunate to not have any of these issues and was able to stay bed rest free...
As far as the dangers are concerned just be happy that it was caught and that it's being treated....

Re: incompetent cervix
I was put on bed rest yesterday, for the same reason (shortening of the cervix). I am only 14 wks and 3 days. I'm on Indomethacin and injections. I go back to my specialist on Friday, if it doesn't get better, the stitching will be next. I am very scared but maintaining positive thoughts. I also want to know if anyone else has or is experiencing this issue.

Re: incompetent cervix
My cervix was very short ( less than 1 cm) at 22 weeks, so I was put on strict bedrest. Drs felt it was too late for a cerclage, I spent a week in the hospital, recieved steroid injections, was precribed procardia every 6 hours and after begging to be let go was then sent home to sit in bed...I was only allowed to get up to use the bathroom, and to go to my weekly appointments, at 32 weeks I was allowed to change to modified bedrest, and now that I have made it to 34 weeks my drs decided if I go into labor they are not going to stop it. It was really scary at first, but I made it this far, when no one really thought I would. Just stay in bed, and follow your doctors orders, there is nothing else you can really do.

Re: incompetent cervix
Thank you for your reply. My Dr told me at my cervix was at 40 two weeks prior (last appt) and as of yesterday it dropped to 24. Now, is that by centimeters? I did not even think about it, since I was so upset.

that is definitely not by cms, I dont know what that is by...It can change everyday, the first day it was at 1.9, which was a concern for my drs, and the next day it was at .9. A normal cervix is between 3-5 cms. Actually at my last appointment it was measured again and is back up to 1.2 . The less pressure put on it the better. Try to calm down a little, stress isnt good for you right now. Bedrest isnt fun at all, but every week you sit in bed your baby gets bigger and healthier.

He gave you the measurement in millimeters so it was 4cm initially and now it is 2.4cm. That is on the shorter side but not horrible. I was in that range from 16wks and went to term. Try to take it easy. It really makes a difference. I hope everything turns out okay.

Re: incompetent cervix
My BFF had the same thing happen to her. It is very important that you listen to your doc and truly stay on bedrest. If he tells you to get up only to go to the bathroom, then do just that. Gravity plays a big role in bringing your baby to term. Do not feel bad that people are doing things for you...please just stay on the couch or in your bed and take it easy. I know you gonna get bored as helll but you can do it!!

My friend had the cerclage done & now has 2 beautiful 3 year old twin girls! She was on strict bedrest in the hospital...
But it was all worth it with the end result!

Re: incompetent cervix
So sorry to hear that Jenny. I'm sure you will def get the cerclage next time. And probably bedrest too. I am 30 weeks now and have been on bedrest since 20 weeks. It sucks, but I feel better now knowing that if something happened with my cervix at least my baby would survive.

Re: incompetent cervix
We lost Rogan at 22 weeks due to an incompetent cervix...my amniotic sac had come through the cervix and ended up breaking. I was put on head down tilt bedrest right away, but I ended up getting an infection and having to deliver.
If bedrest will keep your baby growing - do it....it's hard, but the end result will be worth it.
