Correct me if I'm wrong (and I could ABSOLUTELY BE WRONG) but individual parents can opt their children out as well, correct?? regardless of whether or not the school has opted out.

No. U can't opt out of the curriculum/standards a school uses. You can only refuse the state tests that are based on them.

I hope so too, that NY is next. My first grader uses three more steps than the usual to solve simple addition and subtraction problems (sure, 39-25 is 14 but first he has to use the ten frame, add in or subtract from it, then add/subtract the extra).

I was always in honors math (all honors across the board), got a 5 on the Calculus BC AP.... I don't get this new math at all.

This is just awesome. I really hope NY is next. In college I took a major that required tremendous math and physics, and I did BC calc in HS and I believe the love for math started at a very young age. I did my primary education in another country, we were taught to simplify each equation, each word problem which I was able to carry throughout.
I can't help blame children and adults that hate math. If I was taught this way, I would have hated it too. When it comes down to it, this does not foster learning one bit. I would have to follow the traditional route with DD if this doesn't change.

I don't know much about the common core curriculum and the issues. I know my sons school follows it but it doesn't seem a mess like what I hear from others. I think cause he goes to catholic school.
However, to me the problem above isn't that big of deal or complex. I saw this on FB a few days ago and didn't get what was so hard about it. It's pretty much the same thing you do but with a number line (lol) and reverse. Instead of subtracting the 1's, then 10's and so on you do it the reverse.
I actually think this is simpler to use to solve a problem where you would have to carry and borrow, I.e 425 - 318. I know a lot adults and kids count with their fingers still.
But I also love math and have a bachelors in it, so maybe that's it?

I sincerely hope NY is NOT next. The Common Core is a set of standards, which - in my experience as a teacher and literacy coach - are completely valid in middle and high school literacy. I cannot speak to the Math component. It's the programs that are being implemented that are the problem - not the actual Common Core Standards.
Testing and CCLS aligned programs are what need to be adjusted.
ETA:
A first grade standard for math states:
CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.D.7
Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false. For example, which of the following equations are true and which are false? 6 = 6, 7 = 8 - 1, 5 + 2 = 2 + 5, 4 + 1 = 5 + 2.
That isn't anything unreasonable. It is the PROGRAMS that make it ridiculous,not the standards.

I agree with this. I am not familiar with the math but had to become pretty proficient with the literacy standards for 6-12. They are not radically different from what NYS used to have. My concerns have more to do with the implementation and all the testing.
There have been so many complaints from the American public about how our schools are inadequate and not preparing children well enough. Test scores support those views, especially when we're compared to the rest of the world. I am not saying CC is perfect but I hope people have problems with it are reading the standards and understanding their aim.
The role of money has tainted a lot of the conversation, and it is definitely a problem- but I prefer to see that and testing dealt with rather than seeing CC done away with altogether.

wanted to weigh in, I am a literacy teacher so I can't comment on the math although the way they do it looks ridiculous to me
but the standards themselves are fine its the implementation of them, the curriculum forced upon the teacher, students now required to read material 2 grade levels above what they should be reading and very often with themes and topics inappropriate to the age of the child.
if they left the standards and lowered the reading level and inappropriate content then the reading standards would be fine.

The standards themselves are not necessarily that bad and most are NOT that different. And personally, I couldn't understand why as a country we didn't have a nationwide set of standards. So to be at that point where we DO finally have a set of standards that our entire nation follows, is great.
However, the literary expectations are far too complex (the lexile levels for the next book my first graders have to read is in the 700s!!!), the writing standards for 1st grade are minimal but again, too complex (Write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced events, include some details regarding what happened, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide some sense of closure-half of the 1st graders doing this task in the fall couldn't even write a SENTENCE!!! But they need to provide closure!), and the math... use properties of addition to add whole numbers and to create and use increasingly sophisticated strategies based on these properties (e.g., “making tens”) to solve addition and subtraction problems within 20-THIS was the worst-for something as basic as subtraction, this confused my kids tremendously and my class is VERY smart! And apparently, money is no longer a first grade skill. WTF?
So while I'm more against Pearson, Ready Gen, Gates, etc, I still have a beef with the standards themselves.
IMO, NY standards were fine. What was lacking, to be completely honest, was a strong foundation. We raised the bar too high for many young children and they were never reaching it. Now we have raised it even higher and they have no chance! Trust me, I'm all for having high expectations. They will strive to achieve them. But they need to be realistic and appropriate. CC is neither. And when kids come to school NOT EVEN KNOWING SOUNDS LETTERS MAKE and then are expected to use temporal words and provide closure...we're doomed.

AND most people do not know that there are NO CCLS for Special Ed. Special Ed kids are expected to be taught to the new standards. No exceptions. Even ones that exempt from state testing have to take alternate assessment test that have to be aligned to state standards.
SO, my students with a 1st grade reading level, who speak in 2-3 word phrases are expected to read grade level, high school texts, think critically and write essays about them. And I have higher functioning students. Think about the kids who are non-verbal and SHOULD be working on picture identification. Technically, they are MANDATED to be taught on GRADE LEVEL!!! Think about that for a minute.
ALL of those teachers are going to have the part of their assessment that goes by testing, marked as ineffective. And the kids are WASTING time working on things that have NOTHING to do with what they NEED to work on.
The old NYS standards had special ed standards.
