Infants and airport scanners

Just wondering for anyone tht has gone through airport security lately with infants/toddlers...did you get the airport scan or just opt for a patdown? Are you allowed to even request just a patdown if you would prefer your child didn't go through the scanner? I'm a little wary of both so interested in opinions or anyone's experience.

Thanks!

Re: Infants and airport scanners

I'm glad this topic has come up. I plan to fly with DD this Summer (she'll be almost 5 months). I definitely do not want her going through the scanner because it just makes me nervous. As far as I know you CAN request a pat-down, which is what I'd prefer to do. But I don't know since I haven't flown since all this new security stuff began. I plan to ask my Dr at her next visit about the scanners - see if he knows anything about it (and if it's safe for babies).

Not everyone is subject to the scanner or patdown regardless of whether they are flying with an infant or not - many travelers just need to go through the old fashioned metal detector thing.

The times I traveled with DS recently, 3 out of 4 times I just walked through the normal security thing holding him. The other time, I was subject to a patdown since I wouldn't open a thing of formula that was sealed (they didn't have one of the new machines at the terminal I was at in Phoenix).

I flew for business a few weeks ago and I wasn't subject for additional screening either (my boss was though one way).

Its all random who they choose to get the scan or pat down unless you do something suspicous or dont open up what they want you to.

Ohhh, I didn't even realize all that. I thought everyone had to go through the scan. Flying international so just assumed so but if that's not the case, that's def less of a worry. Hopefully it won't even be an issue. Chat Icon

I flew with DS when he was 13 months. We both had to take our shoes off and I carried him through.
