Airport Full Body Scanners... What do you think?

Ok so I know that there will be some ppl complaining that I should post this on Travel but I really want to get everyone's opinion. With the holidays fast approaching there has been a lot more talk about these full body scanners & body pat downs at the airports. I would love to get everyone's opinion on this, not trying to spark a debate... Just opinions.

I personally feel that flying is a privilege and not a right so we should need to comply with what the airport regulations are or don't fly. I also feel that this is put in place for our security which I am completely happy with. I also always hate when people complain about the lines at airport security too... Please! I don't like to wait either but I get there early and don't mind waiting if it is going to keep me safe in the air. I am fine w/anything that is going to keep me safe.

Re: Airport Full Body Scanners... What do you think?

Ehh, I'm not crazy about the fact that I guess they can see your naked body but it is for a very good reason. I'm sure the people doing the scanning are professionals and not perverts, so I'm okay with it. If it saves even one plane from a terrorist attack, it's worth it in my opinion!

I am really on the fence about them. Given the choice of going through the scanner or being physically searched, I would choose the scanner but that doesn't mean I wouldn't be frisked also. They do have me rethinking future travel plans.

I agree. I don't mind especially when our safety is at stake. If it's going to keep our country safe then so be it.

I personally do not get it. Its for safety issues.
I am not a exhibitionist but if it makes me safe then strip me. I hate flying and I hate everything else then can happen I can suck up a pic.

Re: Airport Full Body Scanners... What do you think?

I'm fine with it.

Haven't been to the airport since they've started using them, but I will be going away in a few weeks and will have to go through them.

From everything I've read about them, I don't see my view changing after I actually use them.

ETA: I'm talking about the scanners in my response, not the patdown. That I'm not too keen on.

I would choose the scanner rather that the body pat down.

Re: Airport Full Body Scanners... What do you think?

I would never let some random joe at the airport pat down my children.

I would go through scanner...so would they.
I don't think I would allow a pat down though.

If the TSA determines a pat down is necessary, you don't have a choice unless you are willing walk out of the airport.

I would rather do that than that pat down. I was watching the news & they were telling people to turn down the scan

I will never be a, "Well, it makes me safe, so anything to ensure that, I'm all for!" kind of person. No. I think there is *always* a gov't agenda to things that are greater than what we really know. That being said....

I don't understand why the need for them.

We already take off our shoes.....we go through that metal detector thing...our luggage and carry-ons gets xrayed. We can't bring any liquids on that aren't test, and after that point, we can't bring any food or drink unless it's purchased from the "Safe Zone." We have a "No Fly List."

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

And the pilots are going to be exempt from it? So, they are safe, I would presume. But if I'm not deemed safe, neither should they. Sorry.

If anything, this was put into place in an effort to further take away civil liberties and get us all used to a certain way of control.

I hate it. I don't feel it will make me any safer.

Many people are going to protest either they day before Thanksgiving or on Thanksgiving, forgot which one, and refuse the scanner and have to be patted down. It will be to hold up lines.

Now, would I refuse to fly due to not cooperating? No, but I think it's ridiculous.

What's next? The same measures before the subway or train rides?

Something bad can happen in there, too. Or while driving through the Lincoln Tunnel. Or the Midtown Tunnel. Or before crossing the bridge.

Where do we draw the line?

I wonder if there is a choice in who you would allow to touch your child?
just read, children 12 and under are exempt from pat downs

I wonder how many pervs will now apply for jobs.

I won't let anyone touch me but the thought of some perv looking at me or my kid (if I had one) gives me the willies.

Re: Airport Full Body Scanners... What do you think?

I'm facing this dilemna now. DH & I are scheduled to fly out of JFK with our 3 year old. The thought of naked images of my child showing up anywhere is HIGHLY disturbing. Heck, there are LAWS against that. Why is OK to violate child porn laws in the interest of airline security????? Personally, I'm debating between the scanner and the pat down, both of which I think are highly intrusive and unnecessary.

An hour ago I read a story of a man whose urostomy bag was broken by TSA agents during a pat down, and as a result he had to fly covered in urine (and suffer the humilation as a result). That is NOT OK in my book.

Our civil liberties are being destroyed piece by piece, and the American public is taking it all lying down and saying "well, if it keeps me safe" they are all for it. I'm sorry, but personally I have yet to see any security measure that would have prevented 9/11 if it had been in place on 9/10.

I agree with the OP...flying is not a God (or Constitution) given right. I'm all for anything that makes us safer. If I didn't agree with it, I wouldn't fly.

I'm a frequent flyer and I don't mind the scanners at all but I have a HUGE problem with the pat-downs.

ETA: I totally agree with the people who said it's not necessarily a "right" to be able to fly. If it's that big of a deal, there are other modes of transport you can look into.

What's more important - your safety and LIFE or one minute of your dignity?

Scan away, TSA. Scan away.

I don't think they need to be mutually exclusive. X-raying the bags and metal detectors should cover most weapons. They could use dogs trained to locate explosives instead of treating law abiding citizens like criminals.
