Infants on solids...how/when do you do it?
Do you give veggies, cereal, fruit just before or right after bottle? Or do you give the solids as a kind of 'snack' in between bottle feedings?
I am so confused about it all and can't stick to anything!! TIA!

Re: Infants on solids...how/when do you do it?
We just started DD on baby food a week ago. I open the jar, out half the jar in her bown, heat it for 10 seconds and feed it to her and then give her the bottle. I give her 2 bottles in the morning then around noon or 1 o'clock i will give her 1/2 jar of bananas and a bottles and then around 7-8pm i will give her 1/2 jar of sweet potatoes one week and carrots the next week and then a bottle and then she is ready for bed. When i registered with Beechnut on their website they mailed me a book with a bunch of information and it had a infant feeding schedule in it, really helped.
Hope this helps!!

Re: Infants on solids...how/when do you do it?
we were told not to do it when she's ravenous... give a little bottle and then some food...
we're only on rice cereal right now - but were told to start with orange colors and then yellow and then green.
the doc also suggested not doing fruit first so that she doesn't get a 'taste' for sweet & then reject the veggies...

Re: Infants on solids...how/when do you do it?
Every person on here will have a different way of doing it...cause every doc will tell you something different, so you can take from everyone, and your doctor and then do your own research and decide what you're most comfortable with. We started on cereal first (oatmeal). Didn't start until 6 months as per my ped recommendations, they go by the AAP recommendation of not starting solids until 6 months. Started with just cereal for a week then cereal and fruits, once a day. Lots of people, and drs, will tell you not to start with fruits because they'll get a taste for the sweet and not want the veggie. I find this to be an old wives tale, so does my ped. It was not the case for DS, nor is it for alot of babies but I'm sure some moms will swear that they're babies would not eat veggies because they had fruit first. Again, decide however you want. My ped had us do food once a day for a month, then at 7m do twice a day and 8m 3xs a day. Again, every dr is different. We were very lucky in that DS ate EVERYTHING with no problems whatsoever. Some babies have a really hard time with it and will not adjust well, so just take your time and follow her lead.
Schedule wise I started with just cereal for breakfast, then when i added the 2nd meal it was dinner, then the 3rd meal was lunch. He gets BFed when he wakes up, has cereal an hour and a half later, BFed before his morning nap. Has lunch, BFed before his afternoon nap, dinner, then BFed before bed. Hope that helps!

Re: Infants on solids...how/when do you do it?
We started with solids at 5 months old. We tried rice first but DD hated it, plus it was really binding her up. So we switched to oatmeal, which she loves. We started out just giving her one serving of it during the day, about half an hour after her 11am bottle. Now at 6 months old, we still give her an oatmeal feeding at around noon everyday, just more of it, and she gets a veggie or fruit at 5pm. And we went in the same order as what Jess mentioned... veggies and then fruit so she wouldn't get the taste for the sweet foods. You'll just have to try a few different things and see what works best for your family.
