Infection from vaccine?!
Has anyone experienced this? My daughter (5) got the Dtap shot Saturday and yesterday her arm was very red, swollen and hard. We took her to Ped and they said the "normal" reaction looks the same as an infection so now I have to fill her with antibiotics 3x per day for 10 days! Im beyond annoyed and also very worried that if its an infection it can travel to her heart? Ugh, did anyone else get a reaction after this shot?

Infection from vaccine?!
I had a reaction to it when I gt it before leaving the hospital after dd1. It was a itchy rash on my back, but reactions are very common to vaccines.
I have never heard of anti biotics for shots and what you describe sounds like a normal reaction. I had a reaction on my arm after maybe the flu shot one year, that sounds like what you described (can't remember which shot)
I'm sure it won't travel if you take care of it with antibiotics.

Re: Infection from vaccine?!
My daughter got a huge red raised area after this shot. Ped said it was normal reaction (picture sent to ped), friend who is an MD said the same. No antibiotics given. It was gone 3 days later. I have never heard of needing antibiotics unless it is an infection. It is possible to get one but I bet it is pretty rare.

Infection from vaccine?!
There is always a small risk of infection with any injection because it punctures the skin. I would not worry about the infection traveling to the heart--is there a specific reason you fear this? What you dscribe sounds like it could be a reaction to the vaccine or an infection. If you are upset about giving your child the antibiotics you should discuss it with the pediatrician.

Re: Infection from vaccine?!
I am a worrier but this sounds like overkill. My DD got her DTAP at 5 last year and had a HUGE reaction on her arm that was HOT and lasted for days. I was told it was normal and leave it alone. It took about 2 weeks to go away but it was fine. I would hesitate to use the meds and would want another opinion.

Infection from vaccine?!
In my experience with 3 kids as well as myself there's always a reaction with the DTAP because of the tetanus portion. I've never heard of antibiotics being given.
Hope your little one is better soon!

I agree with the above - my kids have gotten a similar reaction from shots and I've always been told it is within the realm of normal.
Maybe you can avoid getting a second opinion. I would first try to call the office and speak to the doctor - I would explain that you have read and seen that this could be within the realm of a normal reaction and you would prefer to wait a few days before resorting to antibiotics. I'm sure he would be amenable to that. Many people don't give antibiotics a second thought so doctors often times will not hesitate to prescribe. If the doctor knows you do not want to use antibiotics unless absolutely necessary he will be more inclined to take a conservative wait and see approach. HTH!

This sounds like a normal reaction. Unless she has a fever I would not give antibiotics

Re: Infection from vaccine?!
My son had a similar reaction plus a fever in November from his DTap.. They said it is very common for a reaction like this when they are older.. No antibiotics..
