Inground pools
Does this scare anyone else???
We were supposed to go to a BBQ this afternoon... when I remembered they had an inground pool (not fenced in) I told DH to go, and I would stay behind...
Im very on top of supervising my son- but my idea of fun- isnt running back and forth in a small area @ 9 months pregnant...
We have discussed over and over again- to never go near the pool w/o mommy or daddy- but the whole idea scares the cr@p out of me!

The backyard is fenced in... but not the pool itself. (and we would obviously be in the backyard)

Re: Inground pools
I have an inground pool but the pool area is fenced in as well as the backyard being fenced in. When we first moved here, there wasn't a fence around the pool and I wouldn't go out to play until it was up.
I completely agree with you. Kids are too fast to be around a pool when they are that little. I would have stayed behind too.

Pools scare the crap out of me. DD's aunt has an inground pool and I'm a nervous wreck this time of year. Her yard has a fence, but nothing around the pool. I have nightmares about no one paying attention, her slipping out the back door, and me getting a phone call.

Re: Inground pools
Our new home has an inground pool. It was a must have for my DH. I was not happy with it. The seller had to a fence around the pool according to the town. I am a little relieved about it now.

Re: Inground pools
My mom has one and it scares the crap out of me even though Amanda knows not to go near it alone. That is why she is getting swimming lessons this year.

Re: Inground pools
At nine months pregnant, I would not have gone either but my DH might have taken my son. My DH is often the one to chase after my son. My son will probably be wearing some sort of life vest if he is expected to be around an unprotected pool. My sister has a pool and she would not have it any other way. We do plan to make sure he learns to swim but we haven't done any lessons yet.

Actually it is legal even accoring to that. The house can act as part of the fence, but you have to have alarmed doors and they have to be self-latching. We're in the process of putting in and in-ground pool but ours will be fenced in separately with an alarm on the water (it goes off it the water level goes up).

Re: Inground pools
We have an inground pool that we are planning on having fenced this year...My yard is fenced and our playground area is completely fenced in as well...It took us a few years to have out yard layed out and landscaped since the house was new construction...Now that the yard is finished, we are having it fenced...When I just had my DS, it wasn't too bad because I was on top of him...Now with my DD also, its much harder....

I guess I'm reading it differently then. I read it to mean the fence must be around the pool itself, not just the yard. The building I took to mean a cabana, garage, or the like. Not just a house with a fence. How many people have alarmed sliding glass/patio doors which are self latching that lead to their pool?

Re: Inground pools
We had two BBQs this weekend that had pools in the backyard. At first I was a freak but anytime Jack got close we told him to back away and he did.
I don't think I could ever have a pool in my yard though, that would drive me insane!

Yes! I went to a playdate last summer and went out and bought a swimvest just for the playdate. Luckily, the homeowner fenced the pool area in. They scare the h*ll out of me!

Re: Inground pools
When I was lifeguarding I was hired a few times by people to watch their inground pools during family functions and BBQs. I always thought that was so smart.
I never want to have a pool in my bacyard, especially an inground.

Re: Inground pools
Yes.. they scare me. Especially when they dont have fences around them. My inlaws have a beautiful pool but no fence.. they never needed one because there were never any little kids but now Im hoping they will consider it.
Between me and our 2 children (almost) and my SIL and her baby on the way I hope they realize it can be dangerous.
And since I know my MIL reads this.. maybe she'll consider it

Re: Inground pools
I went to a backyard pool party by myself(dh had to work) when my kids were 2 & 4. NEVER Again!! There were sooo many kids and I was sooooo stressed out that I would lose track of one of mine! I had to stay in the pool almost the entire party!
Also a good friend of mine lost her 2 and a half year old at a family party!! The weather was crummy that day and the party was moved inside. Her dd slipped outside through the sliding glass doors(not locked)& the blinds were closed...she saw the big slide(leading into a huge inground pool)...she went down the slide and into the pool and drowned They found her a few minutes later, but it was too late!!

It states it right here:
A building wall can form part of the required barrier. However, where a wall of a dwelling serves as part of the barrier, at least one of the following requirements must be satisfied: the pool must be equipped with a powered safety cover
all doors with direct access to the pool through that wall must be equipped with an alarm
other means of protection, such as self-closing doors with self-latching devices, which are approved by the governing body
Only ONE of those have to be met.

Re: Inground pools
I am planning on going to FL this summer with josh...the house we are staying at has one and I am having second thoughts all together.
they have one of those net fences around pool...but is in a screened in lanai with tons of entrances from the house.
The kid has always been a resourceful monkey...I can imagine a patio chair being pushed over to fence...I know of 2 FL toddlers that were found in fenced in pools(both survived since they were found in time)
Since I would be going solo...its going to drive me crazy...its sort of like having a loaded gun on the table.

Re: Inground pools
It wouldn't bother me, but I grew up with an inground pool in the backyard. My youngest sister feel in once, but then about 15 people jumped in after her. There are 7 kids in my family and she was the only one to go in and only that one time.
If children aren't used to being around pools and don't understand the danger and the rules I could understnad being nervous.
Unfortunately we don't have a pool, so I plan on being at my parents house as much as possible this summer to get DS used to pool and swimming.

Re: Inground pools
I have an inground pool and a small yard, so there is no fence directly around the pool. We don't need to worry yet bc DD is only 2 1/2 months, but we will get a mesh fence to go around the pool next year.
