Poll- Pools and children, would you be ok with having a pool with small children in the home?
Just looking to see where everyone stands on having a pool with a child in the house.

Re: Poll- Pools and children, would you be ok with having a pool with small children in the home?
i didnt think much about it until my friends daugter drowned last summer. that was the main reason i did not put in an inground pool last year when i did the house. however, my son loves to swim so this year we had gotten him an intex pool but we took the ladder out when we left the yard. now we wish we did put in a pool, but if we did/do ever then a fence would be installed around the pool as well

We intend to get an inground. If we do- it will have a walkable cover over it and a fence dividing one side of our yard from the other. You never can be too safe. We have a jacuzzi now that we keep covered at all times.

Re: Poll- Pools and children, would you be ok with having a pool with small children in the home?
For various reasons we weren't even wiling to look at a home that had a pool, no matter what the price, neighborhood, condition etc.
It was difficult because, I'd say at least 1/2 of the homes in my immediate area and the sytle/size home we wanted had inground pools.
It was the #1 deal breaker for us.

You fogot the "other" option.
I have a pool and will b having children and I am not worried about it. We have 2 sections to our yard. Both fully fenced and I will put extra good gates/locks on the fence around the pool.

Re: Poll- Pools and children, would you be ok with having a pool with small children in the home?
I just bought a house with an inground pool and have a small child and one on the way. I really wanted a pool because I remember how much fun it was growing up and how much I really enjoy it. I grew up on the water and I am very aware of water safety. I believe the rule in Suffolk county have recently changed, and you now either have to have a fence around the pool besides a yard fence or a pool alarm. We will be installing both.

Honestly, not worth the hassle or anxiety for the two months out of the year we could use it.

We are in a co-op now, but when we buy a house, we have decided that that we will NOT have a pool (children or not).

Absolutely not. So much so that, when we were househunting, I wouldn't even look at a house if it had a pool.

If the house had an inground pool, The pool would be fine if it was fenced and locked when not in use. I would probably get one of those covers you can walk on also.
We did buy a house with an above ground pool, but took it out. It wasn't in good condition, and I didn't want the hassle of maintaining it.

Re: Poll- Pools and children, would you be ok with having a pool with small children in the home?
We do not have a pool in our yard, however we do have a mile wide lake across the street that could be accessed by a wandering child. Our homeowners association offers red cross swimming instruction in the summer in an effort to be sure all kids in our community can swim. We do not have little kids but both of our kids learned to swim as infants. If I had toddlers or younger children again I do not think I would want a pool of any kind in my yard. Personally for me its more of a maintenance issue-IMO its not worth taking care of something you can use for such a short amount of time, plus we have the lake so it would be overkill.

As long as you took proper saftey precautions I don't see why it would be a problem....... I grew up in a pool , lifeguarded, etc...... I wouldn't think twice about putting one in .

Ditto. No pool. No desire.
My IL's have an innerground and I am so uneasy when we are there.

I have seen those and they are awesome. I would probably get that AND a fence around the pool (in addition to around the entire yard). I guess I just worry, will the fence be enough?
I grew up with a pool too (not inground). And I would teach my children to swim from day one. We had such fun in our pool growing up that I could not have it any other way. Every summer I am so bored without it.

Re: Poll- Pools and children, would you be ok with having a pool with small children in the home?
we are redoing our yard and my DH wants to put an inground pool in, the plan he has is amazing with the jacuzzi flowing into the pool-etc.. but I am dead set AGAINST it. I feel its jsut another thing to worry about with 2 young children. We are going to wait till they get much older.

Re: Poll- Pools and children, would you be ok with having a pool with small children in the home?
We had a pool but we took it down. It was a PITA and we have a 2 year old. There are too many stories about little kids drowning and it makes me sad. That was another reason why we took it down.

Re: Poll- Pools and children, would you be ok with having a pool with small children in the home?
Our home came with a 28ft round pool that was fine but that was the first thing I removed because of safety concerns, A good friend of mine lost his daughter to a pool and I can't bear the thought of an accident like that with kids mine or not.

Re: Poll- Pools and children, would you be ok with having a pool with small children in the home?
I am a Nervous Nellie- we will be looking at houses soon, but I won't even look at a house with a pool. I've also seen a few with koi ponds, which I guess would not be a deal breaker, but we'd find a home for the fish and fill in the pond. I'd just worry all the time and that's not worth it.

We just bought a house with an inground pool and it makes me nervous. e don't have any children yet, but I am so scared about when we do and they are walking around outside... I am planning on being super careful about it, but it can happen so fast...

Re: Poll- Pools and children, would you be ok with having a pool with small children in the home?
I grew up with a pool. I was never ever allowed in the backyard alone during the summer months. Simple as that. It was drilled into my head to be careful.
Honestly, kids can drown in a pond, in a bathtub, in a bucket. It's not always a pool.

Re: Poll- Pools and children, would you be ok with having a pool with small children in the home?
I don't have a pool and would like one even with DS born this year.
I will most likely be a semi inground AND fenced all around/locked gate, safety cover, etc. We just put in a 6' PVC fence for our backyard.
What stops me is
1/ I have other home improvements to make first 2/ Too much maintainance/time consuming with an infant at this time.

We don't have a pool, but if we did, I would make it safe for not only my young children, but safe, so that neighbors couldn't get into it, either.

Re: Poll- Pools and children, would you be ok with having a pool with small children in the home?
We are building an inground pool soon, probably before the ground freezes. We dont have kids, and dont plan on it for a while, but yes i worry. I also have LOTS of small kids on my block and yes i worry.
God forbid a neighbors kid gets in the back, and drowns, how could i ever live with that. How could i still live on my block and face these people. How could i ever swim in my pool again. It really bothers me. FH wants the pool, i really dont want it
