installing wood floors
Does anyone have any recommendations for someone who installs floating wood floors?
Our house is on a slab so I've been hearing that we can only use laminate/pergo but someone yesterday told us there's a thinner wood flooring that's ok too.
So basically we want a professional to come in and at least give us a sense of how much $$.
Thanx!!

Re: installing wood floors
Actually we did it ourselves. It was incredibly easy and if you buy the installation tools it takes almost no time at all.
I do think that home depot has installers though, if you wanted to check that out.

Really? Easy???
I've heard people say that but it looks so daunting.
I did buy a book on how to install by ourselves. Maybe we'll try one room and see how it goes....

It was very easy, especially with that special tool to slide the boards in. The first room that we did was our living room and we have a curved fireplace. That was a little tough to work around, but the straight-cut boards went in smooth as silk. The second room we did was our dog room and it is a 10x 12 room. IT took DH alone only 5 hours from start to finish. This included ripping up the old rug, cleaning the floors underneath, laying all the layers of padding to even out the floor, removing all the mouldings, etc.

Re: installing wood floors
I am in the process of getting quotes. I am on a slab. You can get laminate (which I have now), hardwood (solid or engineered) on a slab. Really you can have moisture issues with either. Most people tell me the same issues you would have with hw you would have with laminate if there are water issues.
For solid hardwood - you'll need the clearance around your doors - it is thick. You will also need a moisture barrier/sub floor put down. I don't have the clearance and don't want to move up my doors so I am going engineered wood.

That's pretty impressive! DH and his brother are going to check out some flooring options tomorrow so maybe we'll end up doing it ourselves.

I know we have to put down some sort of moisture barrier but beyond that, I'm seriously clueless.

OK, clearly I'm just a slacker because I'm thinking this is going to take us WEEKS to do!

I believe so. They did an awesome job and since my floor wasn't even they put down a new 2" sub floor underneath as well as the laminate.
It was done in one day and had 3 guys working. I liked those guys so much I fed them pizza for lunch and tipped them!

That's a great recommendation! We stopped in there a few weeks ago but the price they quoted for the install gave my DH an anxiety attack.
But....if they do a good job and work quickly, that may be worth the expense (imho)

I was told you can't put down real solid wood as well by some people. Some people say yes and some people say no. Many of my neighbors - all who are on slabs have real hardwood. Maybe the thinner wood - is the engineered wood I am talking about getting. It is thinner - only allows 2 sandings. It is already prefinished so less mess and cleanup and cheaper than real wood.

I talked them down a bit and financed it over 12 months. They had a credit card promo. That really helped. The guys came on time too and it was right before the Labor Day weekend. They even gave me tips on paiting the wood moulding I bought to put in. The laminate moulding is expensive so we opted to buy wood moulding and sanded and painted it ourselves. I can see if I have a picture.

Wow - they did do a nice job! (cute cat btw
Is that laminate, engineered or traditional hardwood?
In any case, I'm definitely going to go back and see if I can negotiate a little.
Thanks for sharing!!

Re: installing wood floors
It was quick step laminate. Not Pergo brand. I read some good reviews about it online. It took us forever to pick a color. I still wish we picked something darker. DH wanted it light and airy. He was such a PIA with picking the color.
It's 3 years old now and has held up great.
The cats love it!
The floor store is so funny-after I got a coffee mug in the mail from them as a thank you.

also, as you can see from the pics I have a very odd shaped room-they did a ton of cutting.

Re: installing wood floors
Well, the coffee mug seals the deal then!
The high quote we got was for the top of the line Pergo laminate. I am going to do a little research myself and see what other brands we can go with.

that's exactly what we did. But word to the wise..do wood moulding..especially in an entranceway..the laminate moudling doesn't hold up to hgh traffic.
We looked at a ton of brands. You are paying for the name PERGO.
Quick Step came highly recommended.

Re: installing wood floors
I'm on a slab too. I did my den, living room/dining room and two bedrooms. The living room was done with Quick Step laminate flooring (click together, no clue) when I first purchased my home. The other rooms I did with a Costco brought laminate that's the same as Quick Step but cheaper. It's very easy to do. If you get someone to do the work for you it will cost $1,000 to $1,500 more.
