Re: installing wood floors
Our livingroom is on a slab as well. We installed real red oak wood flooring to match the rest of the house. Yes, they had to install a moisture barrier and plywood first. The biggest problem is that the baseboard heat must be raised. Normally, the pipes could just be srtetched up/pulled up from the basement a bit but because they are in cement it's a bit more of a headache. The floor costs $1600. and we got 5 coats of poly. Two coats more than standard because I'm a nut.
Here are pics before (the day we closed) and after. The carpet was beyond .
FM me if you need the name of the installer. Image Attachment(s):

How much higher is your wood floor junction with the tile?
We have a slab too.
There is tile on the kitchen side. This is a Levit house so there is a fireplace between the kitchen and LV. Unfortunatelly, the kitchen tile comes in the LV to wrap around to the fireplace.
I really want hard wood floor. We are told we need floating floor.

To give you some indication of height... a bit more than 1/2 to less than 3/4 an inch. If it's real wood (red oak) the boards are thicker and then there is a thin layer of plywood with a moisture barrier underneath. My father had a severe stroke several years ago and has great difficulty walking as his left leg is very week. He can't do steps and he had no problem with the slight incline.
