Insurance/hospital question

Apparently DH's insurance did not cover the MDs who saw Ryan in the NICU so we keep getting a bill. Should I have known to ask for only our insurance MDs? Seems unfair that I'm paying for MDs I didn't pick.

Re: Insurance/hospital question

Jess, Luke was in the NICU too. We had the same issue at first, but once I called my insurance company and explained that I wasnt able to choose what doctors saw him, they were willing to negotiate or remove the charges.

We also had the same issue with the anesthesiologist ( sp? ). They are independent from the hospital, so even though the hospital took our insurance the anesthesiologist did not. I just called and explained to my insurance company that I was not offered a choice..and they removed the charge.

Good luck!!!

Re: Insurance/hospital question

My sister had the same thing for the MD that assisted on her C-section (she had no choice on who it was) and my cousin had the same thing with the anesthesiologist for the c-section. They were both able to call the insurance company and let them know they had no choice in who was chosen. Both insurance companies satisfied the bills.

Same here. When I told the insurance company that I had no control over chosing the Dr or researching their coverage options they negotiated. Since the hospital itself is covered, technically the Dr should not have sent me a separate bill (according to the lady at the insurance co).

Re: Insurance/hospital question

You can't handle these things over the phone, you have to appeal it. Call back and ask for the address to send the appeal to and go from there. Also CC the NYS Dept of Insurance on the appeal.

I had to appeal all my bills and they were all denied the first time. I guess they thought I would give up, but I didn't. Sent a 2nd appeal and all were paid the way they were supposed to be.

Re: Insurance/hospital question

When I have these kinds of issues, I tell my HR department & they always help get the issue resolved. I just have to sign something saying they can talk to the insurance on my behalf. Saves me from having to make a lot of phone calls & be on hold forever.
