Insurance question re: delivery?
So I called my insurance yesterday to find out about my coverage relating to labor and delivery. They told me that my companies policy is a high deductible policy with no copay, which I knew. I have to pay a $2500 copay, $750 dollars of that is covered by my company, and then after that, my insurance covers 80% of the total cost of any visit/procedure and 20% is out of my pocket.
So...my question is....how much money, realistically, are my DH and I looking at for a hospital bill after delivery and stay? I realize it could range drastically, but if I could some sort of ballpark figures it would be great. We'd like to be prepared and know how much of our savings needs to be set aside. Thanks!

Re: Insurance question re: delivery?
Good question, but I don't know an answer.
I'm guessing it depends on how much your practice/hospital charges for a Vag/C-Sec delivery, if you have an epidural, what medication you get, and how long you stay in the hospital.
You will find that the insurance company will get billed for doctors you may not even know you saw.
Side note: I had doctors take care of my delivery. There was one doctor that came in the next day, literally asked me how I was feeling then told me I could go home, and I saw he put a claim in for I think $3k.

Do you think my dr's office would be able to give me a ballpark number, or the hospital? I asked the insurance rep and of course she had no idea. I just feel like it could tens of thousands or even more, and that's not a payment plan I want to be put on, you know? If it's only a few grand, well that we can handle.....
ugh, i can't believe i have such shiitty policy.

Yes, try the doctor's office and find out their fees. Then try the hospital to see if they can give you an idea.

Re: Insurance question re: delivery?
Def call your dr. I know my doctor gave me a printout with their costs. I think vaginal birth was $9000 and C-Section was $10,000 or $11,000

Re: Insurance question re: delivery?
I just got the packet from my Dr. yesterday about the hospital. It had a number to call if we had questions about billing, or didn't have insurance. I'm sure most hospitals would have a person/department for that. I'd start with your doctor and see what they can tell you.

Sorry to hijack - but your post got me thinking - can you set up payment plans with the hospital?

Re: Insurance question re: delivery?
SNCH sent out a packet with their costs spelled out for mom and baby. It was in the area of $10k. This excludes, of course, your doctor's fee, the pediatrician's fee, and the anesthesiolgist's fee (if applicable).

Thanks for the posting. We also have a high deductible, very concern with how much it will actually be out of pocket. I need to call and find out as well.

Re: Insurance question re: delivery?
I did some research about this recently too. The average cost of having a baby these days is about $7600 ... C-section deliveries will cost about 10-12k.
If your particular plan does not cover the majority of the expenses then try to upgrade to a plan level that covers more. It'll be worth it.

Re: Insurance question re: delivery?
if your copay is 2500 then it wouldnt matter if they charge 7000 or 12000 - your copay stays the same so if you subtract 750 from that and then you only pay 20% of what is left, you are looking at $$350
DH and I are fully covered for labor and delivery - we only have to pay $250

Make sure that when the baby is born that you call the insurance company and let them know and they will add he/she to the insurance. It most be done that day. If you don't then you will be responsible for everything that they did on Son/daughter.

no, that's not our copay, it's our deductible. We don't have copays. Once we pay the 2500 minus 750, then my insurance covers 80% of the total cost of everything. We pay 20%. So if the total cost of labor, delivery, stay, everything, etc is like, 20K let's say, then we'll owe 20% of 20K out of our own pockets.

Re: Insurance question re: delivery?
My c-section was about 23K that was for all the drs (2 OBs for a c-section, and the peds checking DS for 3 days) all his care and my own. The Dr portion of it was really small something like $5K for both OBs, but the hospital stay adds up. I delivered at St Catherine's.
ETA: DS had no complications so there were no NICU costs, however with c-sections they did require a neonatal specialist to be present.

are you sure about that? my insurance company requires you to let them know within 30 days. i called my employer when DS was 4 days old and when I verified it with my insurance company a few days later, they said most people don't do it as early as i do and wait the whole 30 days.
and what if you give birth at 11:30 pm...you have to call within minutes of giving birth? that would never have happened for me! doesn't seem right.
ETA: the more i think about this the more i'm convinced it's impossible. insurance companies aren't even open on weekends...how would you report a birth at 11pm on a saturday? it's definitely a 30 day window from the day you give birth. and many companies require the HR person to submit it, NOT you. i know my company is this way. i couldn't have called it in even if i wanted to.

I can't imagine that it true! THat would be a horrible insurance company to make you call the same day! I mean they knew you were going to have a baby!
My insurance company was 30 days and I was able to do it all online.

I was at St. Catherine's too and the total for all of the dr's bills, the stay, anesthesiologist etc. was about $36K in 2006.
I also had a section.
And our insurance company requires notification within 24 hours (not that "day" )
If you post on parenting, you will probably get more responses with actual numbers for you to compare.
