A very accurate assessment. I've always said that people who support Trump are either ignorant, racist, a sucker or all of the above.

Wow. I'll be the mature one and not comment any further on that generalization.

I would hardly call it a generalization. There are a couple of other categories that his supporters fall into as well but those are the top three.

Re: Interesting opinion piece - Reasoning with a Trump Supporter
I hate Trump as much as most Dems do but I disagree that this article is on point. Its only on point if you agree w/ the author's perspective and its an extremely biased perspective. Media continues to drive wedges between Democrats and Republicans at a time when we really need to work on finding issues that unite us, not divide us. I am sick and tired of the anti-Trump comments - he won and now as much as we hate to admit, is our POTUS whether we like it or not.
There are Trump voters amongst my friends and family, I disagreed very much with their opinions and way of looking at the world, but as an American, I am bound to respect their opinion and honor their freedom to exercise their vote and opinion. I know in 1 person I spoke to who admitted to being conned by Trump, the only reason he voted for him was on the immigration issue - saying his idea of a strong America is one that enforces its borders and immigration rules. The fact that ISIS continues to infiltrate democracies and kill innocent people is a fact that mainstream media doesnt spend much time on (as evidence of this, google the title "250 kids kneaded like dough to death by bakery machines by ISIS" and see how this story got more more coverage by BBC, NY Post, Buttbart, and European media than our own CNN).
We need to stop demonizing our neighbors for their views and ascribe labels. Republicans call us "libtards" but here we are engaging in similar behavior... This article just continues to "divide and conquer" while the Trump administration robs everyone blind. While people are distracted by Trumps silly Tweets, Bannon and his ilk are secretly meeting in dark rooms of the WH drafting EOs that are dismantling agencies and rolling back freedoms 1/2 of America appears to have taken for granted. Lets stop the madness and focus on mobilizing Democrats against Trump in 2018 and 2020.

Yep. This is why the politics board consists of the same 15 people saying the same things over and over. I'm just glad they made a separate board for it

What you wrote proves the point of the article. They are turning a blind eye to everything else surrounding Trump because..............immigration. Which BTW is going nowhere right now under his direction. Just more drama and issues.
You're 100% right about what's going in in that administration and I agree with you. Bannon is SCARY and god knows what is happening while the public is being distracted by all of Trump's moronic nonsense. Not to mention, when your president is as dim and clueless as Trump, who knows what he's allowing Bannon to get away with when nobody is looking.
Trump supporters LOVE to point out how bad and corrupt HRC was but seriously, wake up. Trump is NO better and in fact, he's actually A LOT worse because he's such a thin skinned, self serving piece of $hit. These 4 years are NOT going to end well.

Nobody is "crying" and the "sky isn't falling" but to ignore that there is some very REAL, scary, unethical, and questionable things surrounding Trump and this administration is flat out ignorance.

Good points but let me play devils advocate here - dont you agree that voters do not engage in rational behavior when choosing a candidate. Can we not admit that there are definitely some African Americans who voted for Obama in 2008 just because he was black? That there are some women who leaned toward Clinton only because of her gender and they saw more of a "yay a woman in the White House" more than "hey a Democrat that will further continue Obama's legacy (or in some GOPs words "tragedy").?? Its my belief that Trump voters who voted for him on 1 issue are not "stupid" or "racist" or whatever "-ism" his detractors throw out. The Washington Post already had several articles authored by Muslim women and AA men/women who voted for Trump. They all had their issues for choosing the Clown vs those who chose Clinton. Hillary was a weak candidate. We all can agree on that. Trump masterfully manipulated alt-right media to portray her as a dishonest and untrustworthy crook. But I hate that we all need to paint each other w. a broad brush. There are issues I actually agree with the GOP on and there are issues I hated about the Democrats (this is a big reason why I changed my affiliation from Democrat to Independent). I really dont want to be labelled as a "libtard" or a GOP shill. I hate hate hate how the MSM is pushing this narrative.
As far as the the next 4 years - time will be the judge of that. So far he has shown his true colors, I really am hopeful SCOTUS will strike down the Immigration/Muslim ban and I am trying to remain poisitive that Congress will get its act together and seriously consider impeachment proceedings. But I can not in good conscience hop on the Fear Bandwagon and cry "OMG the world is going to shit because of him!!" because after every election, this is what the losing party says and so far we are all still here alive and well. So...I guess we will see!!

All good points. I cannot argue the logic and I do agree.
I will only speak for myself regarding past elections and I can honestly say, even if the candidate I liked lost.............I was OK with that. I had enough faith in whoever won to feel like we'd be OK as a country. I wasn't nervous every day, in fact, I rarely even gave the president a passing thought.
I do think that Trump is VERY different from others in the past. I really don't have any faith in him and if what he's shown us so far is any indication of what to expect over the next 4 years, I feel extremely unsettled. He has an agenda and an attitude that I just get not get on board with. And I truly do NOT think he knows what the hell he is doing. His mouth and ignorance can cause A LOT of problems for this country and that is what unnerves me more than any president before him.
But no matter what, you're right, time will tell.

Re: Interesting opinion piece - Reasoning with a Trump Supporter
I mean - the article is totally patronizing toward Trump voters. You must see that?
On the other hand, I feel like I must be living in some alternate reality when I talk to the people in my life whom I love and they are not the least bit appalled at what has gone on in the first 2 weeks of his administration. And I'll say this: when I can engage in a detailed conversation about policy, their pro-Trump arguments are usually based on a very oversimplified understanding of highly complex issues. I'm surprised, for example, when Michael Hayden, a very level-headed and experienced former head of the CIA who worked in the republican Bush administration says the travel ban makes us LESS safe, I have to scratch my head when people dismiss his expert opinion and insist otherwise. When I read that Trump issued an EO to scale back Dodd-Frank, I bristled at the continued abuse of executive power but did not pretend to know whether it was a good move because I don't really know what I'm talking about since our financial system makes my head spin.
One thing I wish is that everyone wasn't so sure all the time.

Re: Interesting opinion piece - Reasoning with a Trump Supporter
I wonder if Hofstra and I are reading a different article than everyone else because I don't see condescension.
The author expressly states that decent people made a decision to vote for him and shouldn't be vilified. He then goes on to detail logical, factual points based on things Trump has done that progressives can use to persuade those people differently.
Sounds good to me.

I would hardly call it a generalization. There are a couple of other categories that his supporters fall into as well but those are the top three.
Oh what would those be? I'm dying to know what category I fall into since I don't fit any of those.

THIS!
Honestly, I am hugely liberal, but I think it is pretty close minded to say that every person who voted for Trump is a racist or an idiot. For some people, their life under Obama was simply not going well. Hilary promised more of the same, so who can really blame them for taking a shot on Trump?
That being said, I find it pretty telling when those same people have NO issues with the current administration and act like liberals are crybabies who are just angry they lost. Really? Voting for someone does not mean you need to agree with everything their administration does and that you can't be critical when they veer into unethical territory. I disagreed with many aspects of the Obama administration despite being a liberal.
I really just don't know how this country is going to unite. As far as liberals acting like 'the sky is falling' .....honestly, I do feel like it is falling some days! I am sitting over here absolutely horrified by 95% of what this administration is pushing through, and the feedback from the other side is simply that I am a snowflake who is bitter about losing. Really? Coining the term 'alternative facts' to normalize lying, BANNON!, praise of Putin, pushing to reduce regulations on safeguards for our health (clean water, clean air, adequate drug testing), reducing gun control even though gun deaths are disturbingly high in this country, the Immigration ban, us paying for the Mexico wall through tariffs, lack of diplomacy on calls with foreign leaders, etc, etc, all while Trump is tweeting away about SNL, Nordstroms and his popularity. To me these things are horrifying and scary, especially since there isn't much hope for checks and balances with three Republican branches of government.

Thank you for defending and understanding why some people voted for trump. I certainly do not agree with everything he says or does (just like with every president/politician)
And I'm not saying all liberals cry that the sky is falling, i was referring to the same handful of over dramatic posters on here that make a mountain out of a mole Hill with EVERYTHING he does.

The same people come here and rant and rave in generalities. You like to say Trump supporters are uneducated or ignorant. Look at some of the posts here. How quickly people throw something out like OMG he is repealing Dodd-Frank. Yet few actually know what that means. The School voucher thread still doesn't answer why it is bad. People throw out that it hurts kids with disabilities and that's it. People praising Elizabeth Warren but she is in record as supporting the same idea that Devos has. The post asking what people are doing has few responses. The threads about protests are asking where they can find local ones because going to the city isn't practical. So yes it looks like a lot of whining. Get out and do something. ******** to the same 10 like minded people on LIF isn't going to do jack.

Oh what would those be? I'm dying to know what category I fall into since I don't fit any of those.
This is why trump supporters don't post on here and let you guys ramble on and on crying that they sky is falling
This statement: "you guys ramble on and on crying that they sky is falling " is EXACTLY why the article is on point. WAY too many Trump lovers are ignoring what is happening RIGHT IN FRONT OF EVERY AMERICAN'S EYES and they keep pretending like he's a swell guy. He's not. At all.
Nobody is "crying" and the "sky isn't falling" but to ignore that there is some very REAL, scary, unethical, and questionable things surrounding Trump and this administration is flat out ignorance.
First off, part of understanding is doing the research yourself. You don't get vouchers?? You don't get Dodd Frank??................read up. I think many people, myself included, just get tired of explaining the same things over and over. When some of us complain about vouchers or other issues, we're assuming most know enough about them to understand our frustration.
Also, what makes you think that people aren't doing anything???? I know MANY, MANY people, myself included, who are trying to make their voices heard through phone calls, emails, petitions, letters, etc. Don't be so naive to think that because people are expressing their concern or frustrations on LIF that is ALL they are doing. It's insulting.
Lastly, I don't think EVERY Trump supporter is uneducated or ignorant but I do think some are. I can only speak to the people I know online and IRL and I get the sense many prefer to IGNORE what is now going on with this administration instead of just saying, "Hey, I supported him but I'm a little dismayed at what I am seeing so far". Support for the president doesn't equal blind trust and faith and sadly, I am seeing a lot of that. Lots of misinformed commentary and ignorant memes going around from the Trump camp and not a lot of Trump people coming forward with much else. If you're so proud of the job he's doing please, by all means, tell us why. Most can't, because he isn't.

Ive said this before and will say it again. I dont care who anyone voted for and why anymore. But based on what we are witnessing (all that PP said above and more) EVERYONE should be resisting trump and his regime at this point.

Well, I just left a short treatise on the school voucher thread. For sure, as an industry insider, I understand as much about that as you did about the nature of Dodd-Frank. Similarly, there is a lot the under-informed public does not understand about the impact of vouchers on the entire system, though most who root for it are only concerned with their own kids.
I also hope you are not lumping all regular posters on this board together with these statements. Many are active beyond LIF. I certainly try not to make declarative statements about issues where I am under-informed. I also often watch the more measured and reasonable posts get ignored while posters on both sides go right for the argument-bait.
