Internal Sono - Bring DH?

I had my first appointment today. The doc just confirmed the pregnancy with a urine test and did a pap. I'm only between 5 & 6 weeks right now. I know most OBs don't do a sono until 8w but mine does an internal at 6w hoping for a heartbeat so I'm going back for one next week. Should I bring DH with me? I feel awkward that it's an internal (don't want to traumatize the poor guy this early on Chat Icon ) but I don't want him to possibly miss first seeing the heartbeat. This is my first pregnancy so I'm not sure which way to go. TIA!

My DH came with me and cried! He was taken aback by it being internal but I'm glad we got to see our little bean together for the first time! Chat Icon

Re: Internal Sono - Bring DH?

When I went for my 6 week sono it started as a regular over the belly sono and then the tech said that she wanted to do an internal to get the heartbeat. I had to explain to DH what was about to happen Chat Icon It was great though, I'm so happy he was there cause we got to see the flicker together. Enjoy your appt!!!! Chat Icon

Re: Internal Sono - Bring DH?

DH came with my for my internal...didn't bother him at all, he found it quite amusing, and they are so discrete that he didn't actually see anything going in anything anyway...

he wouldn't have wanted it any other way he got so emotional seeing the heartbeat...

definitely bring DH!

Re: Internal Sono - Bring DH?

For the first sono before the tech came in the room he stuttered, "wait, that thing is going inside" I explained, "yes hunnie, this is optimal for visualizing at this early in pregnancy." He was fine!
Then he came one week later when the dr did my sono. At that same visit he did a breast exam, pap, and bimanual all while DH was in the room. I didn't think twice about it Chat Icon

Later on DH told me, "that was a little weird". I told him to get used to it!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Internal Sono - Bring DH?

My husband came to internal sono appts (the ones he could make). I think he missed one or two. I was going weekly at the beginning because of past miscarriages. He wasn't phased by it.

I say bring him!

Most MDs/techs do internal until the NT scan. It's the best for visualizing the pregnancy and heartbeat. I rarely hear of anyone having only transabdominal sono in early pregnancy.

Re: Internal Sono - Bring DH?

bring your DH! It's amazing to see the heartbeat and the baby for the first time.

besides you're covered up..you've got the paper blanket over you so all he's going to see is the tech's arm go under the blanket Chat Icon

I just went today for my first appointment I am 6 weeks and then did an internal and DH was with me. I didn't get to see a heart beat all you could see was the sack but he said next week I should be able to see heart beat. Good Luck and congrats!!

Def bring him!! They put that paper sheet over you so your not too exposed and most office I've seen always have the chairs for DH/SO positined up by your head. My DH was in awe the first time we heard our baby's heartbeat with the first pregnancy. He has already mentioned it to me a few times already as to when we'll be able to hear it with this pregnancy. Not a moment you want him to miss out on!

Bring him! Seeing the heart beat is such an emotional thing, and he'll want to be there for it. Besides, he'll see a lot worse about 34 weeks from then. Chat Icon

Re: Internal Sono - Bring DH?

definitely bring him - seeing/hearing the HB is incredible! You know your DH better than we do, if you think it would help, prep him on the "internal sono procedure" before you get there. Chat Icon

my husband has never missed an appontment... even when i go for the visits without the sono...
