Re: internet router with new computer help
its not working meaning you cant get on the internet? it could be that you need to reset the iP address for the router to recognize the computer.
Your internet service provider may be able to help you with that.

Re: internet router with new computer help
It's a desktop.
Yes, we can't get on the internet on that computer now. I see instructions online to do it, but it seems confusing. My internet company can help me?

Re: internet router with new computer help
Nothing seems to work. We called optimum and the company the router is from and nobody can help us. I guess our only option is to buy another router.

It's a netgear router. I am online now with my main hookup, but the other computer that is used with the router will not work. It is a new computer and that is the problem. I went on netgear website and it ways something about the IP address and it not acknowledging it since it is a new computer. They said for $70 we could purchase a warrante and they can help us, but for that money we will just buy a new one.

Re: internet router with new computer help
a computer is a computer..doesn't matter if its new or old...
does the router get an IP address from the Modem? Do you get online with the other PC?
Did you try doing a reset of the router?
Did you try updating your routers firmware?

We were able to get online with this router with old computer. Now new computer, it is not working. When I go on Netgear's website, they say something about the IP address, but we are so confused. I don't know how to reset the router.

The model number is WGR614. We have windows 7. From what I read, I think it can't connect to the new computer since it was programmed to connect to the other computer.
Thanks for your help.

Re: internet router with new computer help
connect to the router, the computer should automatically get an IP address.
if not, click control panel and go to network and sharing center. (or type network and sharing center in run box)
click on connect to network or troubleshoot to get you started. report back afterwards..
next thing you can try is in the same box, click change adapter settings...tell me what you see... you should be looking at local area connection. if there is an "x" next to the computer screen while the cable is plugged in, then you have a bad cable. While we are talking about cables, on your router, make sure that end is pluged in into ports 1-4. Sometimes there is an uplink on the router...do not plug it in there else it would never work. back to the local area connection, double click on that. double click on Internet Protocal Version 4. Make sure obtain ip address automatically and obtain DNS server are already checked. hit ok then ok.
if the above information is done, you should be online with your new computer.
If you the local area conenction has a different symbol next to it, yellow ! or red X, let me know. The red "X" means you are not connect to anything. bad cable, bad port are to blame.

Thank you for all your help. We just got Windows 7 on the new computer, and I think that may play a part in the problem. We decided to go out and buy a new one, as the one we had is from years back and we didn't pay that much for it. Hopefully we will have luck.

Re: internet router with new computer help
ok but i doesn't matter what operating system you have. you can do a mac, linux, windows 95 for all i care...
you may have a hardware issue with the router. you may have a cable issue...
Buy a Linksys and call it a day. shouldn't cost you more then 50 bucks.
im not a huge fan of netger.
