Invite with a "collection" notice inside
We received an invite to a birthday party for a 2-year old. In it was a letter to the recipient written by the parents but supposedly from the little girl/
The letter tells how she is so excited to have a party but that she already has a lot of toys and so she doesn't really need any more. Instead, he parents are taking up a collection for her at the party and that soup and sandwiches will be provided.
I think we received something similar for her first birthday last year. So odd to me.

Re: Invite with a "collection" notice inside
I mean, I'd understand it if the "collection" was going to a charity, but they would typically write the charity's name...but other than that, to say something in the invitation that they just want $$ is a little odd to me, IMO.

Re: Invite with a "collection" notice inside
Huh a collection for HER and not a collection for a charity or hospital or something. So basically they are saying in lieu of toys please bring cash?

Re: Invite with a "collection" notice inside
A collection for what? If it was going to charity, great! If it's going to the child/parents, TACKY!

Definitely a collection for the child, not a charity.
Which is what I thought was so funny-they are acting as if their child was a charity.

Tacky! If she already has enough toys, they should just say no gifts necessary.

Re: Invite with a "collection" notice inside
We won't even be able to go because it is out of state and not very close family. Normally, I would send money in the card or a gift. Now I am tempted not to, but I will resist this temptation.

Re: Invite with a "collection" notice inside
WOW.
SO tacky.
what is it with people lately??? you do NOT ask for gifts. you do NOT get to "choose" which gifts people bring you.
an invite with a note in it saying that they were taking up a collection for charity instead would be great - especially since charities are getting hit harder with this economy.
they should be ashamed of themselves.

Re: Invite with a "collection" notice inside
a collection? Thats insane!
I get that some kids have too many toys and a letter might be ok to say, please no toys and let the gift giver decide what to do from there.
Ugh, this stuff is so out of control!

I really think that etiquette has been lost. With all these posts, requesting certain gifts, money for food, etc.
What is wrong with people?

Re: Invite with a "collection" notice inside
That's really weird to me! I would feel that I am paying for the toys she already got but my name was not on the sticker. "Grandma" got her the toy. KWIM? Or it's like you are paying for the food they provided.
I would decline.
I have nothing against GC, bonds, etc... but asking for cash is really tacky

Re: Invite with a "collection" notice inside
Sooooooooo - they're telling you to give their kid cash.
taking up a 'collection' to me means you're donating to a charity - not your kid's bank account -

Re: Invite with a "collection" notice inside
I also read it thinking that is a great idea...a collection, then donate it...but to find out its for them to keep!
that's the effing ballsiest thing I have ever heard! Atleast the invite on NFR asks for clothes and toys...these fools are asking for CASH!
These are the people who in 14 years will be charging a cover at the door to a sweet 16.

Re: Invite with a "collection" notice inside
So I just read it again and it says,
"mom and dad will be taking up a collection for me for when I am older-for college or my first car, who knows?!"
