Irregular heartbeat? UPDATE!

I went to the doctor this morning and we could hear the baby's heartbeat skip and then there was an extra beat.

The doctor said it is very common and usually corrects itself after birth. He is sending me for a fetal echocardiogram to be on the safe side, to check the baby's heart.

DH is freaking, I am pretty OK, thinking why worry until there's something to worry about?

Anyone experience this?

UPDATE

We went for the fetal echo today and the doctor said everything sounded and looked fine, so relieved!!!!
Thanks everyone for your prayers and good wishes, I really appreciate it.

Re: Iregular heartbeat?

I didn't experience that, but at 9 weeks my babies' heartbeats were on the rather fast side (186 bpm & 183 bpm). The doctor said it was ok, but I was worried anyway. I went for my 12 week ultrascreen and the heartbeats were 158 & 125. So I agree that those problems have a way of correcting themselves later. I wouldn't worry over it now. Good luck and try to stay calm. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Iregular heartbeat?

i didn't experience exactly that, but during my 20 week ultrasound my baby's heart rate spontaneously decelerated for a few seconds and then went back up to normal. the OB said that they see this every once in a while, and it's usually ok, but sent me for an echo anyway.

here's the catch, though - they don't do fetal echos until at least 24 weeks, in order to get a good view - so we drove ourselves crazy with anxiety for a whole month!! turns out it was nothing, the baby's heart looks perfect.

a lot of things happen in utero that doctors don't see very much - how could they, when they listen to baby hearts for only a few seconds once a month? so when there is something even mildly out of the ordinary, they send you for the echo.

but in reality it's probably nothing at all. in childhood and adulthood it's perfectly normal for your heart to skip a beat once in a while. it's not a perfect machine, and can have a little blip especially in moments of stress. so it really shouldn't be different for a fetus - he/she was probably mildly stressed at the time from the procedure, and his heart had a little blip, no big deal.

believe me, i know it's easier said than done, but please try not to worry about it. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: when i went for the echo the pediatric cardiologist told me that fetal hearts are very sensitive to pressure, and that my baby's deceleration was probably due to the ultrasound wand pressing on a sensitive point, like his head, chest, or neck. so it's possible that your doc was pressing on a sensitive spot with the doppler, and that made your baby's heart rhythm a little off for a second...

Re: Irregular heartbeat?

I did with DS. We had to go to a high risk for a little over a month from 16-21 weeks. I was so nervous. They will tell you some scary stuff. I heard the slowing myself - weird. What is wound up being was an immature heart. His heart was still getting it's patern. There was nothing "wrong". At 21 weeks it just went away. I don't know far along you are but they might want you to see a fetal echo doctor which isn't terrible.

They told us that Liam might need a pace maker but the heartbeat became regular and he's healthy and 18 months old.

It will be fine and actually not that uncommon. I know it's still scary but I know it's all fine.

Re: Irregular heartbeat?

I am not pregnant but both of my nieces had this. My sister in law had the tests done when pregnant and then they rechecked it at birth and then at 1 years old. They both outgrew it and had no complications.
