IRS Letter with Update
So we just got a letter from the IRS telling us we owe them another $766 for 2007. It looks like my part time job at the time wasn't included on the tax form, but I am pretty sure it does. I have a call in to my accountant, but does anyone know what I can do about it?
Update:
So I spoke with my accountant last night and we went through our Tax forms and the part time job WAS included. He told me to dispute the letter, include a copy of that W-2 with a letter stating that it was included on our tax return and please adjust their records. He says that should work.

Re: IRS Letter
You/your accountant will have to provide evidence that your part time income was included in the income reported on your tax return. If it was, the IRS will review everything and upon satisfaction send a letter confirming everything is ok and the file is closed. If it wasn't reported, you will need to file amended tax returns to both the IRS and NYS and pay the additional tax plus penalties and interest.

Re: IRS Letter
DO you have copies of your 2007 tax return?
DH got a similar letter except it was 2005, from the state and only 169.00
since DH didn't keep records of ANY of his tax returns not much we could do about it.

Re: IRS Letter
We received a letter stating we owed 5K more in taxes due to some IRA stuff.
I got all of our documents together, copies of statements, etc and wrote a cover letter detailing why we did not owe the additional monies. We received a follow-up letter about a month later stating that they review our documents and concluded that we do not owe anything additional.
Just review your documents. If you have proof you already paid taxes on it, you will be fine.

you can always get copies of your returns from the IRS.
Sorry that happened.
To the OP, let your accountant handle it if you have one.
I have a feeling lots of us will get letters saying we owe money when we don't. They are desperate for revenue and some people won't even question it.
I hate the IRS.

I almost wouldn't care about paying them, but 1, I don't have $766 and 2, I remember waiting for my w-2 from that part time job to file my taxes.. and I highly doubt my accountant would just forget to put it in.. he puts copies of all our w-2s in our copy of the return..
I am just p*ssed off bc I am leaving for my vacation on Sunday and I want to go away with a clear head.

Re: IRS Letter
1. check your return when you get home
2. if you had an accountant prepare 2007's tax return make sure he gets a copy of the letter.
there is the chance you gave him the W2 but he forgot to put it in, It does happen, we just recently did this. My accountnat paid the fees for the client since it was his mistake.
3. If you didn't report it, and the accountant didn't screw up, you can write a letter asking them to put you on a payment plan. in the end it will cost you more, so try to make the largest payments possible.
sorry you have to go through this, but hopefully it was reported and it will work out in the end.

Re: IRS Letter with Update
wait, if you paid your accountant to do that years tax return, why is he not writting the letter for you??? We ALWAYS handle anything related to the year we prepared. You paid him for his services. I know its the IRS who screwed up (and YAY for that ) but we write these letters ALL the time and use a standard format, that always works with the first letter.
If you need help FM and I can give you a copy of a standard letter to mail them. I'm really shocked he isn't doing it for you though

Re: IRS Letter with Update
I was thinking the same thing as Heather - they accountant should prepare the letter for you. I am glad it was an IRS error and that you don't owe them!

I wish I would have seen this sooner.. I wrote a letter stating that it was included on out tax return and a copy of the w-2 and mailed it this morning.. If anything comes back, I will definitely make sure my accountant handles it next time.. hopefully there won't be a next time!!!

Re: IRS Letter with Update
I hope they are satisfied with your findings too!
I got the same letter last week. We owe $600-something for 2007. I haven't investigated our actual returns yet but it looks like such a simple error. I don't think our accountant would've forgot it.
