Is 3 months too early for cereal?
Our pediatrician said I can start giving Spencer 2 tablespoons of cereal a day, to help fill him up because he eats a lot during the day. I thought most people didnt start until 4-5 months. Should I start him or should I keep waiting?

I'm going to ask the Dr this week if DS can have cereal now at 3 months, he's 18lbs (big boy!) and I feel he need's more food besides the EBF. I don't think its to early at all, they usually start on cereal at 4 months anyway.

We started at 3 and 1/2 months. Athan is a pretty big baby and formula and breast milk just wasn't cutting it, especially at night. FOr his last bottle of the day, he mixed in 2 tablespoons cereal and it really filled him up and helped him sleep a lot longer without getting up for middle of the night feedings because of hunger.

Re: Is 3 months too early for cereal?
It's really a personal decision. If you feel that DS needs more of a rich diet to hold him over to the next feeding, then it might not be a bad idea.
I tried starting my DD on cereal at 4 months but she hated it so I chocked it up to her not being ready. I stopped after a couple of days & restarted cereal at almost 6 months without a problem.
There is some concern with a higher likelihood of food allergies if you start babies on solids too early. I think that's another reason why people sometimes choose to wait.

the decision is entirely up to you. for me, dd was eating alot and always seemed hungry. so we asked her ped and she gave us the go ahead. so we started it and dd loved it.

Re: Is 3 months too early for cereal?
I started cereal a week before he turned 4 months ... my doctor oked it before but I felt guilty from all of the searches and responses I read regarding starting early..
but as soon as I started...MY DS was so ready for it...he eats his cereal like a big boy, he goes for the spoon with mouth wide open and doesn't spit any of it out unless he's laughing or had enough.
My DS is far from being a fragile little boy he's been picking up his head from very early, has excellent muscle control, sits up without any problem.
So go with your gut feeling...I should have started earlier in the 3 month because I know he was ready for it.
He went for his 4 month visit and the doctor said he is normal but at a higher percentile and is completely ready for cereal, oatmeal, barley, veggies and fruits.

Re: Is 3 months too early for cereal?
We just went for Joey's 3 month visit the other day, and I asked the ped. about this. He said not to until he is closer to 4 months, but every baby is different. Joey is not a big baby, and he seems to be filling up just fine on formula, so the ped. didn't think there was a need for it yet.
