Is 35 weeks too early to start washing clothes and pack hospital bag?

Just curious when is a decent time to start...is there such thing as "too early" for either

DH thinks it's too early to wash the baby's stuff because he doesn't want them to get dusty or get pet dander...Chat Icon

I started at 34 weeks and told that I can go at anytime. I don't think it is too early because you are in the home stretch and you never know when you are going to go.

I would certainly pack your hospital bag and wash the burp cloths, sheets, towels, and a couple of outfits, but frankly I would wait on most of the clothing until DC is born so you know what size he/she will wear. It would be pointless to wash newborn things if DC is born weighing 9 lbs. b/c the clothing would not fit kwim.

Not early at all. I'm on my second child (due the end of July) and I just started to wash down some baby items (car seat, bouncer, toys, clothes etc...) After washing them down really good I covered them in plastic bags. Then when the baby is born and we're ready to use them I'll give them another quick wipe down/cleaning.

I also took down my little suitcase and started to pack some things for the hospital.

My fear is something happening and not having this stuff done or near done. I hate doing things at the last minute.

As far the baby clothes just wash them two weeks before and cover them up or put them in a bin. From experience here I wouldn't go crazy washing lots of baby clothes only because the baby will be in pjs and onesies with mittens for awhile. I would wash those but as far as all the cute little outfis up to 6 months you can wait on that.

Re: Is 35 weeks too early to start washing clothes and pack hospital bag?

I'm 35 weeks and I just started packing my bag last weekend. Haven't washed the baby clothes yet, I'm trying to hold till the baby is born because I'm a freak and worry that my level 2 got the gender wrong. I'm going to wash some of the neutral clothes and save the rest of the washes for once the baby is here (if I wasn't such a whimp, I would def. be washing all the baby clothes already)

I'm due the day after you and having the same thoughts. But I think it's a little early, actually. I feel funny about doing it now. I'm going to wait a few weeks and wash sheets, towels, blankets and a few baby things that are gender neutral or were bought for specific reasons (ie coming home outfit).

We don't even have anything for the poor little guy to sleep in should he come early! Chat Icon We're borrowing a moses basket from a friend but have yet to go pick it up!

I've pretty much washed everything I know I am keeping.

And at my 33 week appt, the doc said I should have my bag packed sooner than later (I'm over 40, starting weekly monitoring and will not be allowed to go past my due date though). DH was at the appointment and gave me a deadline of last Sunday to have my bag packed and ready to go. It's got everything but my iPod and camera (and hair dryer).

I started at like 36 weeks and wish I'd done it earlier! And that's just washing the clothes! I still have not packed my bag yet! Or bought nursing bras or finished painting the bassinet or put the car seat in!!! Chat Icon

But as soon as we got our furniture delivered, I washed and put away that day!

I threw my car seat cover and head plushy thing in the wash along with the bouncer seat cover(fabric seat easily comes off the bouncer). I washed it with a clear free liquid detergent and added an extra rinse cycle to the wash. Remember to tumble dry these items you don't want them to shrink and not fit the stuff. I acutally hung it to dry.

As for the Pack n Play Chat Icon I'm still thinking about how to clean this one.

I don't think its too early

I had most of my bag packed at 34/35 weeks

I have most of it done now, 36 weeks and have about half of baby's clothes washed and ready to go....probably will do the rest of the smaller size clothes within the next week

Re: Is 35 weeks too early to start washing clothes and pack hospital bag?

Definitely not too early, but I would not wash everything you have for the baby. As BTDT mom, I found it safe to wash this amount:
- 10-14 onsies and sleeping gowns/pjs,
- 2 or 3 sets of sheets and blankets
- 4-5 receiving blankets
- 10-12 burb clothes
- 4-5 washcloths
- 2-3 towels
- 2-3 outfits

When I needed more after the baby came home DH did the laundry later in the week.

ETA: with my first son, I washed so many things before he came and I wished I hadn't. He ended up being bigger than expected and ended up not wearing most of the newborn stuff. I learned the 2nd time around and it was great.
