All peds prefer rectals. They are the most accurate. Ear and rectal are not necessarily the same.

Re: Is a baby's ear temp the same as rectal temp?
Rectal is the only way to go for a newborn esp. I have tested the ear thermometer on myself, with another oral one I have that is very accurate. The ear one was majorly off every time.
With a newborn being precise is extremely important. Go buy a Vicks RECTAL thermometer, they are easy to use and foolproof. I just bought one and I am very comfortable with using it.

Re: Is a baby's ear temp the same as rectal temp?
My DS is sick right now(he is 22 mths, not a newborn) at the ped today his ear temp was 101.9 and the dr. said it was probably close to 103 rectally! We got home and i took his temp and it was 103.1
The dr. said the ear one are OK to get a ballpark, but if you think your child has a high fever, you should really take it the other way.

No-they can differ quite a bit, I would go rectal.

No. Most peds won't go by an ear temp - they are not as accurate as a rectal temp.

Re: Is a baby's ear temp the same as rectal temp?
I have a thermometer which does rectal, underarm, and oral. There are degrees for each.... I'll put them here so that you can see the varying temps:
Oral: Safe - 97.0 to 99.6 Fever - over 99.6
Rectal: Safe - 97.3 to 100.4 Fever - Over 100.4
Underarm: Safe - 95.4 to 98.6 Fever - over 98.6

Totally agree! I always do the rectal because the ear is generally way different.
