Is anyone else freaking out about BPA in bottles?

I know this subject has been brought up before. Honestly, I never really though much of it- and figured that plastic bottles have been used for years, so you think they would have figured this out by now. However, a friend of mine brought it up to me the other day- and asked me what I was going to do about it- if I was going to replace my bottles with BPA-free bottles. She and I use the same type of bottles (Dr Browns). She brought up a good point- she said that she would hate to keep using the same bottles and then find out in a couple of years that its really harmful.

THEN- I just read a truly terrifying article on webmd about it. I literally am sick to my stomach about it.

So I mention it to DH, and he thinks its a scam, and I don't need to go out and buy new bottles.

I was already getting some Born Free bottles tomorrow anyway just to try them out- but now I feel like I have to get all new bottles.

Just was wondering if anyone was just as scared as I now am about this.

Honestly? No.

Maybe I am alone here but I think that if there was a TRUE risk the bottles would come off the shelf, not just get a worse rating in Baby Bargins, KWIM?

THere are other options, like drop in bottles, etc.

I had Dr. Browns and switched to Playtex Drop-ins after reading on BPA.

It turns out it was even better for DS' gas issues.

I have always used glass and will continue to do so even though I do not heat up DS formula. I just like glass better b/c it is more durable and has a lower risk of getting scratches and cleans better. JMO

Isn't the only cause for concern if the bottles are heating with liquid in them? I've never heated bottles, I give them room temp or cold, so I'm not concerned in the least bit. Plus I use drop in's anyway.

Its not just with that, from what I read. Its also from washing them in the dishwasher, or sterilizing them. Its basically anything with hot liquids, not just heating them up. That was according to this article, anyway.

I am usually a freak about everything but not this. I heard that the Dr. Brown's bottles are now being made with a different level of plastic. The "safe" kind. I was never worried because it is only when liquid is heated up while in the bottle.

Well that wouldn't make sense because if they are heated in the d/w and the toxins are released, there is nothing for it to be released into since there's no liquid in the bottle.

I think if you are questioning yourself and thinking about it so much, I would just change the bottles, just so you can sleep better at night Chat Icon honestly, some things that I read bother me, some dont bother me as much... it is what you comfortable with... I switched bottles to born free and I love them!

ITA... I read about the BPA when I was pregnant to my DS and it bothered me so I decided to buy Born Free bottles.

When all the articles came out DD was already using the bottles for several months. Prior to knowing, I did wash them in the dishwasher, sterilze and heat the bottles in warm tap water. I didn't run out and buy new ones, because my ped convinced me not to panic (plus I was planning on taking her off the bottle shortly.)

I will buy born free for DC#2, but I can't stress over what's done. I can't change anything and just pray no damage was done.

Its that its broken down by heat, so when a liquid is later on poured into it the toxins are released then from the erosion of the bottle.

Thanks! I never really get anxiety-ridden over anything, but for some reason, this has got me all nervous!

I am getting some born free bottles tomorrow, and if DD likes them, then I am going to totally switch over. Even if it turns out that everything is fine with BPA- at least I have peace of mind. Chat Icon
