Is anyone else freaking out about the possibility of being excessed?
We just had a very sobering meeting with my principal. NYC schools are going to be facing 8-12% budget cuts. There's no way we can take that kind of hit w/o putting people in excess. I know NYC has a "no layoff" clause, but if the mayor declares a "state of emergancy" (or something like that) it basically voids that part of our contract. We were told that everyone with under seven years might be in danger. I'm on my 4th year in the city and I'm a guidance counselor... so I'm definitely at risk.
I'm more than a little scared. Anyone else with me?

I am in NYC and our administration says they don't see excessing happening in our buildiing by a long shot

I wouldn't worry about it. They aren't going to layoff anyone. If anything, the City needs more teachers. They'll cut the fat in other places first.

Central administration and the support organizations will take the hits first!!
Don't worry, even if you are excessed you'll get a position elsewhere.

Also, the teachers that have already been excessed will go before those that are currently in the classroom.

I am definately worried. I am on the island, and in my second year of probationary teaching. I am fourth on my senority list and apparently they are cutting four special ed teachers. That would mean that I will be excessed this year...

Gotham Schools Blog
This blog has a piece about what could go down with regard to the budget. The Mayor is the one who will make the decision to lay off teachers and the most recently hired will go first.
