ETA: I know Bush spent $$$ on Iraq and he is equally at fault for the recession. BUT Obama was elected on the pretense that he would:

1) bring change to Washington
2) get us out of the recession
3) pull out of Iraq
4) help "main street" instead of "Wall Street"
5) Curb frivolous spending in Washington

NONE of the above has happened YET. I am still waiting for "change" I can believe in. Chat Icon

It's been only two months, get over yourself. At this point, the only person that would be able to fix the US that fast is Jesus Chat Icon

I agree...people can't seriously be this inpatient with expecting change in something that took 8 years to build.

The man has been in office for 2 months.

I just wish people would realize that REGARDLESS of who would have won this election - the mess that was waiting for them was not going to get cleaned up so fast and that easy.

You think any of the others would have had us out of all of this at this point? I don't think so

Re: Is anyone else worried about the out of control spending of this administration?

Let's see someone can take on 8 years in two months? Or actually let's be honest this was a 10-15 year build up maybe even more. This is across the board problem after problem.

Mortgages were rated as good investments and backed, sold off to other companies then made as investments for other banks. Who's fault is that??? Not even Bush - its the system we put to safeguard this stuff.

Faulty trading, investments - bush no but stock market, financial institutions and the FCC yes.

I disliked Bush but Bush didn't cause all the major financial problems, his administration just sat there and let it happen. I realize it somewhat started with the Clinton years but that was during a high economic time, once our economy was slowing down Bush's clan was supposed to be checking on all these major things to see where the money was falling through the cracks. Instead they sat there, focused on a war, oil (wow that is a shocker) and foreign affairs. This was a very important time and a smart leader (or i should say intuitive leader) would of really started to realize that he had to turn his efforts to internal matters instead of international to put a stop of this derailing financial train.

NO one not even Obama can fix this mess right away, this is something that will take DECADES. And for those who say "oh there is not recession" then you live in a bubble. Drive down Baldwin main town and see boarded up businesses (or perhaps anywhere but your gold coast areas), check your local middle class neighborhood real estate listings and look at the foreclosures/short sales listed, check all the high end department stores having sales when they never had sales, look at the unemployment rates, look at the lines of people waiting for work at job fairs, look at the value of your home, look at the trend of students going to local state schools - should I keep going?

Yea people are at car dealerships, why not add to your debt? why not keep charging on your card when your rates are going higher? I mean if you were smart and have money socked away this is the time to spend it since businesses need business and items are priced low, finance rates are low, etc. But I see this as the general public yet again can't learn that if you don't have the money then don't borrow it to spend it.

Yes... the bailouts freak me out and piss me off.

HOWEVER, I think that our country was already a mess and I'm not sure what else would fix things. It takes time...

I'm trying to look at the silver lining, which is that I agree with Obama's other policies and perspective and I'd hate for the religious right to be in control

Are the posts about Jindal and Palin running in 2012 serious, or tongue-in-cheek? It's hard to tell on the internet, but I really really hope people were being sarcastic Chat Icon

I agree with Snickers and whoever else.

we are in DEEP DOODOO. DDEEEEPPPP doo doo.

regardless about what Obama says, or what in his heart of hearts he would like to do, I am preparind and prepared to be taxed more in a few years.

we as a country are still taxed lower than some of our european counterparts...but WE as americans complain to the high hilt when the govt takes money to take care of the very business we EXPECT them to take care of.

(I am NOT talking about "pork" here, so bear with me)

a study recently came out about the frightening failability of bridges, tunnels, and dams.

for all the outrage of Katrina, if our taxes have to go up to suppor the infrastructure, we balk at "big government"

what good will having a "smaller" deficit...(b/c let's face it, it's not a choice between having a decifit and NOT, it's just one being smaller...but when you get into the trillions...i mean really...Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon ) if unemployment worsens, if our home values plumment to unforseen levels, if the bridges and tunnels and dams fail and millions of people are displaced or killed????

I can't think of that. I am not smart enough to fully wrap my head around this stuff.

so, I thank the Gods for my job, my hubby's job. our home. I spend the money we CAN spend, save for the inevitable rainy day, and enjoy lifes simple pleasures.

the world has seen great catastrophy and the falling of empires far more powerful and vast than ours. human beings find a way to survive and thrive.

maybe this is our wake up all...telling us that capitalism as WE have defined it, is just as incapable of creating a societal utopia...the American Dream...as communism was defined and applied by the Russians.

maybe we need to dream it all up again.

Re: Is anyone else worried about the out of control spending of this administration?

I am very worried about the state of our government (Obama included, but not entirely). It just seems like the people who are picked to be our leaders are running around like chickens without a head, making rash decisions, passing rash legislation without thinking about the long term consequences, etc. It is surreal to see them falling over each other. In the last week it became very evident that NONE of the parties involved in the passing of the stimulus were communicating, much less reading what they signed! I think it is embarassing and appauling. I feel like the government is in no way more organized, efficient, or legitimate at this point than the corporations it is trying to fix/punish.

Re: Is anyone else worried about the out of control spending of this administration?

I would not mind if I was being heavily taxed if we were taking care of those still ravaged by Hurricane katrina for example but the stimulus bill did nothing for the people it promised to help.

That being said I had low expectations to begin with so I'm not that outraged. Its unfortunate that Obama supporters are seeing how messed up his stimulus package is--it is leaving our children and grandchildren to pick up the pieces. Sort of taking out a HUGE loan and making them pay for it. I wouldnt care if it was truly reducing unemployment etc but honestly the stimulus package he put together was not meant to help the people, it was meant to give the government an excuse to give themselves more money to "help" the people. It is evident in the fact that there was a clause that AIG could continue to hand out bonuses. The only ones that are outraged is the public, and why because they are still not working, otherwise it would have gone unnoticed. At least the war was creating jobs, the haliburton's of the world giving back to our economy.

Re: Is anyone else worried about the out of control spending of this administration?

Just to add and reiterate what a few posters previously stated, but it keeps getting lost. The financial situation we are in currently did not begin 8 years ago when Bush came into office. The groundwork for this collapse was firmly laid in the 90s. It continued to grow and still continues to grow because of the out of control spending of Congress. You cannot place the full blame of the economic situation of the country on the President -any President - Clinton, Bush or Obama. Congress has been known to spend a ridiculous amount of money over the past 20 years for nonsense. There is too much pork in every bill that is passed through Congress regardless of which bill it is. The President is left with almost no choice but to pass these pork filled bills because there is no line item veto. It's pass the bills with the problems or don't get anything done. Do I agree with this methodology? - No. Many of our politicians, not just presidents, have too many personal agendas and forget to represent the people that elected them. It's time that the citizens become aware what their representatives are doing.

That being said, I'm not a fan of Obama and am very nervous about the amount of money that has been spent in such a short period of time. Only time will tell what they will mean for us, but I am expecting plenty of tax raises in the next few years - especially if he's serious about cutting this debt (which I see almost impossible in such a short period of time.)
