Is anyone not buying their DC much for the holidays?
I feel so cheap, but my family is going INSANE with what they are buying that I feel like there isn't much more that we want or need.
My mom spent two hours buying a TON of stuff at Toys R Us yesterday and my MIL is buying him the FP play kitchen and he is getting gifts from 5 aunts and uncles on Chris' side and my entire extended family
Plus, my parents AND SMIL (who has also gone WAY overboard) are coming here on Christmas morning, so he will have stuff to open.
I was thinking of doing his stocking, then getting something else bigger and then I'd be done...
Is that TOO cheap?

Re: Is anyone not buying their DC much for the holidays?
Well, I have shopping issues - but I am trying to hold back really. I got Jack a few big items - but mostly, I am telling my parents to get the rest.
My mom got him the Fisher Price Home. The sit and stand singing stage. She is getting us lots of storage from Pottery Barn for the office.
I got him a little ride/walk thingie. A crawly type toy. Some bat and ball thingie. LOL! As you can tell I really have no clue what I got him. The toys I bought him were all from Kohls (when they had the 50% off sale)
Anyway - after rambling - to answer your question - don't go crazy this year bc they will not have a clue about it anyway!

You are NOT being too cheap at all. Same with us-- our families are sooooo generous, that there isn't a need for a lot from us, esp. in the early years.
What you're doing sounds perfect, IMO!!

I don't think it is...he really won't know better anyway!
I bought Emma like five things. My family isn't doing gifts this year so that's pretty much all she will get, but I'm sure she'll be more than thrilled and will probably like the wrapping paper better anyway!

I always hear how tupperware is such a big hit - maybe I'll wrap some up for Jack!

MIL was trying to decide between the home and the kitchen and chose the kitchen...and my mom got the sit and stand singing thing too...
Is the storage for the toys? I think that may be MY gift

What about putting $ into DCs college fund? That way you are giving a gift but not adding to the clutter?

Re: Is anyone not buying their DC much for the holidays?
I am only getting DD a kitchen and maybe 1 or 2 little things. She doesn't know the difference and I know she will love the kitchen. I did have to downsize to the smaller kitchen and I am upset but there is no room. I am sure she will love whatever I get her, I just never had a kitchen as a child and fell in love with the big one.

Re: Is anyone not buying their DC much for the holidays?
We don't have much extended family and I have a good friend who works for Mattel that got me everything I wanted to get Grace for 50% retail. So I did get her a lot of stuff(her birthday is only two weeks later too) but I cautioned the rest of our family not to buy much. So basically I got her a lot but again, didn't really spend a lot either.

I'm not getting her much. She is only 9 weeks now and besides needing a few little toys, what else could she possibly need?

Re: Is anyone not buying their DC much for the holidays?
Dh and I planned on not buying DS too many gifts, but between my inlaws, parents and us, we all went completely NUTS!!!!!!!!! My parents opened up an account for DS when he was born, so for each occasion they put a generous amount in it. We also have an account set up for DS and do the same. The plan was for all of us to only put money away for him and we would get him a few toys. Plan failed....on top of putting money away, we all still seemed to have gone over board with buying him gifts because we all just get so excited. Just when we say NO MORE, one of us ends up buying DS a gift At this point, DS will have so many gifts at Christmas, it will probably be overwhelming. What I plan to do is put the toys he gets for Christmas away and each week give him a new toy to play with.
ETA: to answer your querstion..NO your not a bad mother!!!!!!!! last year, DS was 3 months at Christmas and we only bought him 4 gifts and put money in his account.....

Re: Is anyone not buying their DC much for the holidays?
I too have shopping issues so I was very proud of myself for sticking to my budget. I have some things for his stocking and then got him about 5/6 toys for under the tree. My MIL gave me money to buy things for him from them so I split the money between clothes and toys which he will open on Christmas Eve since we host.
We are going to my BILs for Christmas day and I am sure he will have quite a few gifts there. I just wanted him to have some things at home.

Re: Is anyone not buying their DC much for the holidays?
Ella's really too young to understand or ask for anything so I'm taking advantage of that while I can. I know she'll get a ton of toys from our families. Last year I bought her a silver teething rattle from Tiffanys (nice memento gift, but she also loved playing with it) and a few books. This year we got her a Schoenhut baby grand piano (since we just bought a grand piano for us).
She'll get that and a few other little items. Any other ideas I have for her, I'm giving out to family.

Re: Is anyone not buying their DC much for the holidays?
considering he'll be just under 2 months old..not really getting him much. essentials, definitely but he's received so many gifts already and w/the hosp. bills - its just smarter to put some money aside towards his fund and then spend the rest on what we need.

Re: Is anyone not buying their DC much for the holidays?
DS will only be 6 months. I don't think he knows any different. AND I don't think buying tons of toys will make him "happier".
So, we got a jumparoo. Grandma is getting him some books (in my native language). I think he is getting a Radio Flyer Wagon too. That's about it.

Well, since we live in a small space and we are going home for Christmas & DD's b-day (lots of gifts from family), we aren't going crazy on our own. She's getting stocking stuffers and two gifts from us.
