Is anyone watching Maury re: overweight children?
I am just shocked watching this.
The 3 year old boy weighs 114 lbs!! It breaks my heart to just look at him, he will be teased relentlessly when he gets into school. Not to mention the health risks.

How is is possible for a 3 year old to weigh almost as much as I do? That's schocking & so sad.

I was wondering also how it happened? Was it medical? I am at work so I am not watching. From past shows, I remember seeing laundry lists of suausage/bacon/and greasy food. Those are the parents that should be ashamed of themselves not the ones with genuine medical issues.

I agree. This is a form of child abuse/ child neglect. Kids can't make these choices for themselves.

Re: Is anyone watching Maury re: overweight children?
I haven't seen the episode - but I wouldn't be so quick to call CPS.. there are a lot of factors that need to be considered and I am certain that shows like Maury sensationalize things.
My gf's daughter looks like she is tremendously overweight.. but she is built like a BRICK. She IS overweight.. but the problem is more that she is a little pudgy on top of an already big frame. This particular gf is rail thin and her husband is bodybuilder huge. They eat healthfully and her daughter has a big appetite. How do you tell a 5 year old that she can't have another apple without sending her the message that she's too fat or that she needs to be more concerned with her body weight? I think sometimes it's a lot more tricky than substituting fresh fruits for sugary cereals.
And there is the money factor. Starches are cheap. Lean protein is not.
And then there is education. It's not that you intend your kid to be fat.. but some people just are used to a certain way of eating and don't seem to get that you don't need gravy with every roast and that biscuits or bread is not requisite. Some people don't like salad and never consider thta they should introduce them to their children. And some kids simply REFUSE to eat vegetables and do you say "Well you eat the peppers or you don't eat at all?"
I just don't think it is as cut and dry as withholding ice cream sundaes.
And the other thing for me is WHAT does CPS do exactly? Should they focus their resources on homes where the kids are fat - but the household is otherwise loving -and take that time away from children who are in imminent danger from abusive and truly neglectful parents? And if the parents struggle with providing that healthful diet, do they traumatize the kids by pulling them out of the house and putting them in foster care hoping that the next family will be able to control their eating and exercise habit better.
I don't know. I DO understand it is a problem.. but I think education is way more important than calling CPS.

You know, it might be a matter of education to some degree, but it's also learning to draw boundaries. It's much easier to give your kid the cookies he wants than to say no.
Poor kid though, he needs his parents to show him how to eat properly.

i just wanted to clarify what i said. first of all - i mean no offense to you or what you said - but if you did not watch the episode - you have no idea how horrifying this woman was.
she SPECIFICALLY stated more than once that BIGGER IS BETTER and that she was HAPPY that her daughter was obese (and yes - obese is what she was - she didn't 'look' overweight - she was more than 105 pounds - though this SPECIFIC baby may've been more than that - i don't remember her specifics).
She overfeeds her burgers, pancakes, pizza...etc. The woman was BRAGGING about the fact that her daughter was large and she was just out of control disgusting (the mom).. It was not a matter of education, etc....it was just a lack of whatever you want to call it...morals, standards, etc.
This was not a matter of my child is plus sized....this SPECIFIC woman was bragging and PROUD that larger is better.

I take absolutely no offense. Like I said.. I didn't watch the episode so I couldn't comment on that particular woman at all. She sounds like an awful piece of work.
My commentary wasn't actually directed at anyone who would want to call CPS on a parent who makes a concerted effort to harm her child (and overfeeding them IS intentional harm) - but was more directed at the idea that there ARE a lot of overweight kids who don't have morons for parents. I'd hate for anyone to get the idea that overweight kid = parent with the same ignorant mentality as that particular woman on Maury.
