Is chocolate ok for a dog??

My little one loves everything sweet...when I eat ice cream she is on top of me to eat it....she loves chocolate (dark also)...is it ok to give it to her (in a very small amount of course) or is it a total no no?

also, she loves apples, are apples ok to give??

Sorry for these questions but she loves the craziest foods...

TIA!!!!

Re: Is chocolate ok for a dog??

Chocolate is NOT ok. It can be toxic.

I am not certain I would give apples on a long term basis. They have a lot of sugar and certain breeds of dog are prone to diabetes. Maybe in very small doses sporadically.

I'd think so. I am not a vet, but I have seen dogs become very ill very quickly from diabetes. I'd try to substitute with carrots, which are OK for them and still have a sweetness.

Maybe you can put the peanut butter dog paste on some treats rather than give your pup people food? I know my dog loves the Kong Peanut flavoring.

ETA: Just saw the list!!! Thank you so much, very helpful!

The list is a great resource, but keep in mind that just because something is not listed as toxic does not mean that it is ok to feed long-term Chat Icon

ALSO: There are shops that have dog treats that taste like chocolate but are yogurt based & have no chocolate in them. Chat Icon

You are very welcome....here is a Picture pf Pyxie, my Chinese Crested, eating a dog-friendly cupcake. I got her a pink one, but they had "chocolate," white chocolate, and a bunch of other flavors. External Image

And for the ice cream -- don't they sell "doggy" ice cream? Frosty paws or something like that?

Chocolate, no way.

Apple seeds are DEADLY to dogs, but reg apple is OK I think. Grapes are highly toxic to kidneys, as are raisins.

Try to just give your dog her own dog food and dog treats. Dogs can get diabetes easily if too many human foods, sweets, etc

Great list. Just wish they would add apple seeds, seeds. I read that apple seeds are poisionous as well to dogs.

Katie loves Frostie paws. They sell them in the supermarket freezer. I just got her a frozen "cake" we will try for the next special event. It was next to the Frostie Paws, cant' remember what it is called.

I'm not sure if it was the Frostie Paw brand but it was next to them at Walbaums.
