Re: Is giving birth really painful?
The truth of the matter is when you are holding your child for the first time and you look at your DH at this life that the two of you created together, you are not going to care how it happened. You will be thrilled beyond measure. (at least in my experience)

Not preg or TTC, but wanted to chime in. My mother always says it's like your cramps, when they're at their worst. You can't sit here now and feel like what bad period cramps feel like unless you have it right now; she says it's like that. You just forget.
This sounds like what my mother said.

Re: Is giving birth really painful?
I think it is a different experience for every person. Yes it is painful but like all the other mommies said when it is all said and done and you have your beautiful baby you do forget.
I am having #2 and my son will only be 16 months by then. I didnt have the best experience, I also had an epi, actually 2 the first one only numbed my ankle - the second one worked and I am doing it again. What I am trying to say is you get through and you will do it again but in my opnion only those who have experienced it can truly say what it is like.

Re: Is giving birth really painful?
I love all of these responses. I feel like I have a high threshold for pain but a low threshold for complaining. I have been psyching myself up for years to do it 100% natural and I will try as hard as I can but it seems almost everyone gets an epi, so it must be safe, and the way it seems to ease the pain it sounds like it is heaven sent.

Yikes! Research the epi before you agree to one. Yes, they can be wonderful for some people, but they don't work well for everyone and can cause complications.

True dat! I had two...the 1st one didn't take (more like the anest. didn't know what she was doing)..the second one worked but quickly wore off as soon as I started pushing. I had soo many drugs pumping through me at one point, I started to go unconscious. They had to slap oxygen over my face! I still have (over two years later) chronic back pain in the area where they performed the epi. Yes, it was a blessing at the time because I was actually hallucinating from the labor pains, but I wish I had been stronger because the never-ending back pain is something I'll probably have forever
Girlygrl, love your blow torch analogy!! Pushing definitely reminded me of that!

Re: Is giving birth really painful?
Woah! I am so sorry that you are still suffering. And when you say research... on my own? Or through the doctor? I mean, is there really anyway that I will know how it can affect me until after I get it. Keeping in mind though what I said at first, I have every intention of going 100% natural.

Maybe check out resources outside of LIF (parenting boards, etc.) to get a more broader feeling on the subject. You honestly can't tell until it happens. I was 100% convinced I wasn't going to get an epi under any circumstance. But when those pains kicked in and I felt like I couldn't breathe, I would've taken it in the eye to make it stop. Sometimes, it's just out of your control. I give soo much credit to the unmedicated Mommies

I really like the book The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth . It explains a lot of the pros and cons of epis. Unfortunately, there is no way to know whether you will suffer from the negative side effects of the epi. But I think it's always important to be informed, so when an epi is offered you can make your own decision whether or not it is worth the risks in your individual situation.
Ambersmom -- I'm so sorry you had a bad experience and still have pain!

Re: Is giving birth really painful?
I was induced, had the epidural and had a FABULOUS experience.
Every woman is different - unfortunately there is no way of knowing how you will react to the epi until you are given one.
I healed rather quickly - and have to say that all the pain and discomfort disappears soon after holding your child in your arms - its just a beautiful experience.
Having gone through it - it wasn't all that bad - i actually can't wait to do it all over again!

I've heard that too. Well if that's the case - then I could probably handle it - when that time comes. Becasuse I've had killer cramps before BC, during and after BC.

Ok, don't want to scare anyone here, but I wouldn't compare cramps to labor PAINS. I honestly have described that going through labor without meds feels as if someone has reached into you and is squeezing all of our major organs in a vice grip, it is so tight that it takes your breath away. That is the truth! So don't think it is similar to mentrual cramps, because it is a million times more intense, but we all did it and continue to do it and look forward to doing it in the future.

Re: Is giving birth really painful?
My best friend, who thinks giving birth is the best experience ever, describes it as a tree trunk coming out of your crotch. If that doesn't describe the pain she went through and how joyous it still was, I don't know what would.

Re: Is giving birth really painful?
I remember giving birth clearly both times. While the human body can't recreate pain, the mind can remember it WELL.
Lucky for me, it wasn't that painful. 2 births, no epidural/pain medication. I consider myself one of the more fortunate. I also had 2 foot surgeries which were MUCH more excrutiating.
For those that are intent on having a natural childbirth, PLEASE remember it's about having a healthy baby, not how you had the healthy baby. While I think it's a great feat for women that can do it, hearing someone consider themselves a failure because they had an epidural just saddens me.
If anyone has any questions on natural childbirth, feel free to FM me.
eta. I would never consider labor similar to menstrual cramps. In the beginning, it mimics them. Later, there is no question you're in labor and you'll be thinking "MENSTRUAL CRAMPS!? WAS SHE KIDDING ME???!!"

See, this is exactly why I want natural childbirth -- to have the healthiest baby possible! I do agree, though, that no one should ever consider themselves a failure if they feel they need pain medication -- you can't predict complications that may arise and, particularly during a long and painful birth, an epi might give you the ability to relax and build up your strength. However, for me, I prefer to use other pain management methods first and consider an epi the last resort.

Re: Is giving birth really painful?

I was in labor for 7 hrs before my epi came and yes, i will be honest, it was the most excruciating, horrific pain i have ever experienced in my entire life. At one point I attempted to throw myself out of my bed onto the floor hoping i would knock myself unconscious. My DH caught me mid flight. When i got the epi i was fine, but then it wore off and my ahole doctor would not allow any more and basically i wound up with a natural childbirth at the end which i did not want. And it ***** hurt. BUT, yes there is a BUT here, my Doctor, L & D nursing staff and hospital itself were absolutely, by far the worst 3 combinations anyone could have possibly asked for. So next time, if there is one, those 3 things will def be different. And I dont care what anyone says, when I think of that day, and retell that story, I can remember and still shudder at the thought of my experience. And i'm sure when my son is 10 i will feel the same way. So if that makes me a drama queen, then someone please pass me my tiara.
Ok, this was hysterical!! Loved it!

Re: Is giving birth really painful?
OMG are we forgetting to mention how you feel in the days after...if we are being brutally honest here, lets talk LOCHIA. 6 weeks of heavy, disgusting bleeding, not to mention the other detritus that comes out of your hooha for days afterwards, I swear an old shopping cart and a fish skeleton came out of my front bottom. Haha, and they tell you its okay as long as it doesn't smell rancid. Lets hope none of us ever get to that point. OH and the stinging when you pee, not to mention the first time you go for a poo. Oh, I almost forgot what sitting down felt like...can you say OUCH!!! Getting up, that was almost as hard. I felt like John Wayne for about 2 weeks after I pushed that kid out...like I had just ridden Red Rum in the Kentucky Derby EVERY DAY FOR A MONTH.
Ladies, enjoy the birth, worry about the 2 weeks afterwards!!
But, 8 months later, I feel fine.

Well I guess if you get an epidural it's not that painful but I can't say because I didn't have one. I had a natural, drug free birth and while it was painful it was pain with a purpose so it was a different kind of pain, the kind of pain you know you can get through.
I felt the same!
