I feel fine (thank goodness) just curious. My MIL wants to come help us out, but naturally is concerned with getting sick. Is it common for adults to catch it from the kids?

I think so, my SIL just got over it. She had 103 fever to go along with it.

Yep, an adult can catch it, but the symptoms are much more mild...

This was my experience. General malaise, feeling cr@ppy for a few days, a slight fever. It manifests itself differently in people.

It is not as common for adults to get, but they can and if they do it's generally mild compared to the kids. I just had it from my son about 2 weeks ago and I had achiness, headache and sore throat. Lasted about 3 days. No other adults he was in contact with got it except me Chat Icon

Re: Is it common for an adult to get coxsackie?

DH has it now. He shared ice pops with DD when she had the fever, before we knew it was coxsackie. Anyway, our ped told us that you HAVE TO WASH your hands after you touch the infected child and DO NOT share food, or utensils. I have been washing her bed sheets every night and just scrubbing everything down after she or DH uses anythign I have cleaned my bathrooms every day since she has had this and so far (Knock wood) I do not have it. HTH. MY MIL came up to help us Monday and she does not have it b/c I told her to take these precautions. DH thought I was being a NUT, BUT who's sick now???? huh??Chat Icon j/k

I would let her help and just give her the info so she knows how to handle it. If she can take care of DD while you take care of DS, that would be the best option IMHO. This way DS would not be exposed to it. KWIM?

I caught it from DS last summer and ran a temperature of 105, but I think it's rare that adults get that sick.

When DS had it, our ped told us it's definitely possible for DH or I to get it but it wouldn't affect us in the same way or to the same degree of severity.

wow - I am surprised at the reactions

I was going to say NO. I even asked the Ped if I was at risk for it and he said it is not common for adults to get it. Of course, being preggo I was 2x as worried, but he said I would be fine - and I was! Chat Icon

being that Bella (who was 11 months old at the time) drooled directly in my mouth, I know I caught something from her (sorry for the TMI). I was sick pretty horribly with a virus for close to two weeks total (it varied from not being able to get out of bad and being able to make it through the day) It was unlike anything I had ever experienced.

My doctor said it was directly related and I had to ride it out.

Coxsackie is most contagious to children under the age of 5, but anyone can get it. As parents we are most at risk because it is spread through saliva and fecal matter. That is why is is really, really important to constantly wash your hands.

It is a good idea if you have a child wearing diapers that you take off those soft terrycloth covers while they have it and just use the vinyl changing table thingy and clean it every time with a bleach and water mixture. Especially if kids are sharing a changing table.

Re: Is it common for an adult to get coxsackie?

Adults don't get it often but when they do its usually pretty significant. My mom caught it eight years ago from my daughter and she was horribly sick for 2 1/2 weeks, lost 10 pounds, and went back and forth to the doctor three times.
