Re: Is it rude to ask...
Its really a matter of if YOU care what people think. In my honest opinion, yes, some people will find it rude, others not. I personally hate being asked to remove my shoes.
This might sound like a weird mentality but i don't feel "complete" at a party without my shoes...its part of my outfit, and i am not keen on wearing a pair of slippers. I like my heels
But...if you are ok with some people maybe not liking it, then do what you want. I always remove them if asked but i don't like it.

Are you ready for a billion pairs of yucky shoes to be piled by your door ?
I dont think it's rude, Ive taken my shoes off at many homes. and in yucky weather, it's definately more called for.
I had white carpets when we moved into this house, and I really didnt like asking people to take their shoes off (someone I know has NO problem asking us at her house, yet she tramples right in to anyone's house without taking her shoes off now that irks me )
and just a sidenote, but Im sure the baby wont be crawling around the house when there's a party going on, right?
why wouldn't babies be crawling around, it's a 1st birthday party. I wouldn't imagine everyone holding their babies the whole time
what I meant was I cant picture babies crawling around where adults are walking around. as in "watch your step, baby underfoot"... usually the "crawling area" (for lack of a better word) is one section or area thats usually already set aside for babies/kids (playroom or play area). and the adults that are with the babies are just sitting around nearby with them. does that make sense?
but my point (I Think ) was that why would the weather be a factor in people taking their shoes off, if you ask them because there are babies crawling around, this would be rain or shine no? ahh sorry, this got too confusing

I get what you are trying to say. Usually I have mats and a rug by the door since my front doorway opens right into my house. I don't usually ask people to take off their shoes (DH is horrible about taking off his). I do have a shoe caddy hanging in my front closet. I just think with snow even if you wipe your shoes they'll still be wet. I've decided to put my BIL on Swiffer duty everytime someone comes in

Great idea! Tell him he got away easy, I had my BIL dress up as mickey for a party, since we rented only the costume and just have old towels also on the floor, just as people walk in, to absorb lots of the water.
have fun

Re: Is it rude to ask...
I've bee to parties where it was snowing and the hostes had a sign on thier door with a cute saying (and I'm sorry I dont rember it) to take off your shooes and put on socks that they provided (cute holiday socks)
Could that be an option?

Re: Is it rude to ask...
I want to take my shoes off usually!! LOL So I don't think it would be rude - but I know some people can get their tail feathers ruffled about anything. I think providing slippers or socks is a cute idea! That also solves the hole in the sock problem. I think if you also think that there will be a few people who refuse, you will be able to let it slide when the time comes
ETA: You can have a whole bunch of towels on the floor in the entry so people get the hint to wipe well too

Re: Is it rude to ask...
not rude. I think people should respect others in each home. I have friends that tell us no shoes and I don't flinch. I am asking people now to do the same in our home.
