Is it SO bad to vacation without DS?
DH and I are planning to take a little vacation in early March to Florida. Just the two of us with another couple.
When I tell people that we are going without the baby they look at me like I just knocked a baby bird out of it's nest and stepped on it.
The reactions are anywhere from mild confusion: "You are taking the baby, right?"
To downright outrage "Parents don't get the luxury of vacationing alone." (and that one was from my MOM.)
Is it THAT big of a deal?
We had a hard year last year with his tumor and my back surgery. And DS, while wonderful and the light of our lives, can take a lot of a person and bringing him doesn't say R&R to us.
Honest opinions, please.

OMG - honestly -
THEY ARE OUT OF THEIR MINDS!
You deserve a vacation with just your husband. That's what grandparents are for.
Go - and enjoy.

I left Jared with my parents when he was a year old so we could go on a week cruise with my dh's cousin and his wife. It's not bad at all. You'll feel bad for maybe the first day and then you'll get over it.
Enjoy!!!!

I say enjoy! They are probably just saying that because they are jealous and never had an opportunity to vacation without their own kids!!!

I think it's a personal decision. For me, I can't imagine vacationing without DS -- but that's me. As long as you have someone you trust to take care of your son, go and have some fun!

Can I ask why you feel that way?
And is it something that you feel shifts as they grow older?
I'm just trying to understand the other side of this too.

"Parents don't get the luxury of vacationing alone"
this is the most ridiculous statement I've read in a while....sorry mom
It could stem from her not taking any time when you were little, but it is totally and completely necessary.....
You have to nourish your marriage in order to to have a happy family, and that means time without kids....
I have no idea what goes on in the heads of parents who won't go away without their children. I actually had people not come to my wedding upstate because they wouldn't leave thier kids...... ....I shouldn't roll my eyes because that's their preference, but I just don't get it....
I am planning to go away ASAP as soon as DS gets his sleeping act together....and I drop 10 pounds!!!!!
GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Is it SO bad to vacation without DS?
I can see it being a personal decision, I live with guilt everytime I leave my DS anywhere. It stinks. But I do it anyway. Sometimes because I have to and other times because I need a break. Honestly, I don't see a problem with it but have had people make comments about it. We haven't done a vacation yet but we will eventually. And while I have things planned with DS I also have things planned without. You just need the time with just your DH. DS sleep over my MIL's every Thursday night since he was 3 months old because she watches him Thursday and Friday while I work and it is easier for us because she is about 30 minutes away. I feel so bad but at the same point it is sometimes a relief for me because I know Thursday night and Friday mornings are a little easier, especially since my job is super stressful and I work a lot. Doesn't mean I don't love him. And it doesn't mean that I don't miss him terribly, especially by Friday morning. I climb the walls on Friday's because I just want to go home and see him. In the end as long as I know he is in good hands then we're ok.
So, GO, and enjoy yourself. Some parents just can't bring themselves to do it. And that's fine. But it seems as if you're ok with it. So GO!!!

Re: Is it SO bad to vacation without DS?
I see nothing wrong with it if you have someone you feel comfortable leaving DS with. We have no one we close by that we could leave DD with, but I have considered bringing her to my parents in FL and going away for a couple of days with DH. You definitely deserve the break and vacationing with DC is definitely NOT as relaxing. Enjoy yourself!!

I think it's fine to vacation without DS. I've only taken a couple of weekend trips with DS so far, but I would definitely take a week if I had the chance!

Re: Is it SO bad to vacation without DS?
Nothing wrong with you and your husband having a break, in fact it could do both of you and your DS a world of good (good for him to have happy, rested parents)!
My parents have that sacrifice mentality as well, that once you have a baby, you give up your life for them. Well, looking back, there were times when they probably should have taken some time away from us. While some of that is true and there are sacrifices to be made, you still need to have a life outside of your baby I think.
Have fun, and don't pay attention to them.

Re: Is it SO bad to vacation without DS?
just because you now have a son doesn't mean that you and DH don't have a relationship outside of him that needs nurturing and attention. you deserve time together alone. GO on your vacation and ENJOY!! you will be better parents for it.

I couldn't see going away on vacation for 2 weeks without DD but I'd definitely do a little vacay if I could.
You just go and enjoy yourself...keep in mind that people will always make comments.

People need to keep comments to themselves
DH and I left DS and went away for a much needed weekend away. It was great and really refreshing.
Go, have a blast, ignore all those comments!
