Susan - did I ever tell you I emailed a guy's boss to tell him to get off the phone or use the vestibule? I never heard back from him but for sure he got the email. The seat you are sitting on a train with a cell phone doesn't turn into the cone of silence....
See, I love that.

Re: Is it time for more rude LIRR stories?
I had a guy next to me one friday yaking on his phone from Penn to at least Valley Stream. I kept giving him the side eye and making huffing noises. He finally said to the person on the phone, "sorry I gotta go, the person next to me is getting annoyed I'm on the phone." Like I'm the *****. I wanted to say, "sorry I don't need to hear about your colonoscopy appointment" but I knew if I opened my mouth it would get ugly."
Then there is the lady who insists on smoking her morning cigg at the top of the platform stairs every morning. Just what I wanted to smell first thing in the morning, cigg smoke.

ouch.. touchy subject... and while i do understand how it is annoying... i am a smoker and there are a number of us that do the exact same thing (either the top of bottom of the stairs).... and i have to say, until its illegal or a law, we have our rights too....
i honestly mean that in the nicest way possible, not looking to start drama here.

I'm not a smoker & I agree with this to a point. Completely in your right to smoke. Howevr, I've moved several times on a platform to get away from people smoking only to have someone walk next to me & smoke. So stick to the smoker group

Re: Is it time for more rude LIRR stories?
How about this, once after a Ranger game DH & I got on the trained that was completely and totally packed, we are all standing squished like sardines when some drunk idiot gets on the train with his buddies and an entire pizza! They opened the box right smack in the middle of where everyone was standing and just stood around eating pizza and drinking. The stupid box took up more room than most people did!

But the same thing goes for the person who is too big to fit in a seat-until there is a law against it they have their rights too.
See how that works?

I was thinking the same thing. How can you point out Smoking as being a touchy subject but calling people Fat isn't? I don't get it! It really boils down to being tactful in the way that you talk about something.

I understand they have the right to smoke. But to stand in an area (right at the top of the stairs) where you know people have to walk through is a bit rude IMO. If they moved in 5-10 more feet I and everyone else could walk on the other side of the platform to avoid having to inhale smoke.

Never said they COULDN'T sit there... just simply agreed that it wouldn't be very comfortable...
if someone is smoking, you have the option of moving to another location on the platform, you wouldn't choose to stand in the middle of a group smoking would you? ... same as choosing to stand instead of wedging yourself in between two other people...
if the larger individual is already seated, i wouldn't wedge myself into a seat... i would expect it the other way around too.

Can I share subway vents too?
I was on the 1 or 9, packed in like sardines, and the guy behind me opens his newspaper. As he is TURNING THE PAGES he catches my hair. I let him know that he is pulling my hair and he tells me it's my problem
After that, I needed to stretch a lot and my arms kept hitting his paper.
God I do not miss those 8 years commuting on the LIRR and subway.

But if the smokers are clustered at the top or bottom of the stairs you generally have NO CHOICE but to walk through the cloud of stinky smoke to get to the train and that smell sticks to you-I know I can't get the smell of smoke out of my hair until I shower again.
At least if someone sits next to you you can always get up and move/stand.
Neither situation is fun, but neither is better than the other.

That is a doozy. Wow.
I don't know how you commuters contain yourselves. I'd be going apeshitt on people.
All that annoyance and stress has got to turn you (generally speaking) into a negative nelly, huh?

Re: Is it time for more rude LIRR stories?
There's an important difference here. no one has a right to a seat on the LIRR. You can't sue someone for taking the last seat; it's first come first served.
On the other hand, we all have a right to be free of others' smoke-all the time. puffing a carcinogen on someone is a harm that they could probably sue you for--just as it you loaded a watergun with ink or an allergen (or a carcinogen).
Just like we owe it to one another not to spill things on them, attack them with a chemical, etc., we all have an obligation not to puff smoke in someone's face. I know people don't typically sue over this, but it's a harm not all that different from things people do sue one another over.
Your right to enjoy your space ends when it impinges on another's rights.

I get the same stuff on the express bus. Phone yappers, those who claim a seat for their bags, smelly food, too much perfume or cologne. The best has to be people who get on the wrong bus and can't figure out why they are going over the 59th street bridge when they wanted to go to 79th and 3rd. The lady who would spray her hair with hairspray every day - in a bus where the windows do not open.
How did you make out with your torn skirt ? I've read in the past that it is a big problem on Metro North too.

Re: Is it time for more rude LIRR stories?
On an earlier afternoon train last week a woman was on her cell phone from Penn to Jamaica with someone who apparently lost one of her contracts. Contract for what, I don't know, but she was Getting very concerned over it. While pulling into Jamaica she says "I can't hear you, I'm on a train!" Some guy yelled back at her "Well we can all hear you just fine!" She got off the phone after that.
I'm spiteful - I always want to sit in the seat that a person has reserved for their bags. Even if the one in front of them is open. There's an overhead rack for a reason people - use it!

I agree there are some numbers on the express bus. I take the bus in from Queens & I have had to change my bus because of some of them.
There is this trio of woman - a mother, her daughter & friend who gets on after them. They talk THE ENTIRE way in - LOUDLY about anything & everything.
The mother has this obnoxious laugh that makes you want to bang your head against the window several times. The daughter is prissy girl who loves to talk above the other two & their friend is just an annoying with her own habits.
The best part is - they are friendly with the bus driver - who brings them each an espresso every morning. Ummm mister - they DON'T need it...it makes them talk more.
Other passengers have moved their seats to the back because they are THAT annoying. The best is when they notice it and start making comments like "whatever, its not their bus if I want to talk I'm going to talk"

Re: Is it time for more rude LIRR stories?
Ok, i'll share my story from last night
i was on the 9:05 train home - I had a long day and was sitting in a 2 seater on the outside seat, reading my book. The train was about 3/4 full, definitely empty seats around.
At Jamaica, a guy asks to sit next to me so i get up and let him in. Go back to reading my book.. after a minute he turns to me and says 'long day huh?' and i give him a polite nod and go back to reading. Then he says 'oh, you're reading a book, what are you reading?' i tell him its a book on the Vietnam War, then he says 'oh, i thought you might want to chat during our ride and i didn't want to be rude by not talking to you' so i said - 'actually, i just want to read my book' he says - 'oh, yeah don't you hate it when someone comes along and talks to you and you can't read'? me - YES! him - oh ok, i guess you don't want to talk to me so i'll be rude and listen to my ipod
