Is it time to drop from 2 naps to 1?

DS is 14m. Right now he goes down for his first nap about 3 hours after he first wakes up, he's then up for about 3-3.5 hours and I put him back in the crib. He always takes 10-20 minutes to settle down and fall asleep but lately he takes 40-75(!) minutes to fall asleep!

When I google "time to drop to 1 nap" it says the signs are usually during the first nap (which isn't a problem) and that they take a while to fall asleep and then sleep for only a little while... also not the case, once he falls asleep he can go for hours.

What's the dilly? If I keep him up much later in the middle of the day for his 2nd nap it will get to be too close to bedtime. And he's so tired in the morning I can't imagine him going much longer before I put him down.

Help!

Dd dropped to 1 nap at 11 months. Her morning nap just started later and later and lasted longer and longer.

Can yôu try putting him down a little later for his am nap? Maybe push it to 4 1/2 hrs after he wakes up in the am, skip the pm nap and put him down a littler earlier at night for bedtime. Then slowly shift the single nap towards a 1:00ish nap. The Healthy Sleep Habits book suggests 7:00am wake up, 1:00pm nap, 7:00pm bedtime. My kids are early risers so I have to adjust that schedule a little. I think mst kids avg switching to 1 nap around 14 or 15 months.

DD is almost 18m and STILL gets cranky, is ready for a nap about 3 hours after she wakes Chat Icon

Most days, she takes 2 while at home.

my twins dropped the pm nap on their own. they're always so exhausted in the morning (they wake up early) and raring to go in the pm. We slowly adjusted the morning nap to be later and later until what it is now, about 12-2:30

DS dropped his second nap around a year old. Most kids drop their first nap, which is why the article you read said to look for signs during that nap. However, some kids drop their second nap. And I think that's what your LO is doing.

IMO, 75 minutes is too long to wait for your child to settle down. Anything over 10 minutes (or so) and that usually tells me DS isn't going to take that nap. If I let him cry, eventually he'll tire out and go to sleep, but why force it?

Ds dropped to one at 12 months. Daycare did it so we followed. My ds will get cranky any time of the day whether he is tired or not so we just work through it.

DS dropped to one nap by 11 months. His morning nap stayed the same but went from being an hour and a half to 2-3 hours. I just made his bedtime a little earlier until he adjusted. So instead of going to bed then at 730, he went at 7. Now at 20 months, he naps about 5 hours after waking (so 11ish) and that's his one nap. He is in his crib no later than 8pm for bed.

Every kid has a witching hour where they are just cranky. His is usually between 5-6. So that's when I usually let him have his tv time, lol.

DD dropped her second nap at about 14-15 months.
