Is it totally weird to make DH's last name as my middle name and keep my own last name? It's so hard to let go of my last name!
I've heard of ppl hyphenating or changing their middle name to the maiden name but I've never heard of anyone making their middle name their DH's last name and keeping their maiden name the same.
I have such attachment to my own name. It's my identity from school and work.
At the same time, I feel like if I have DH and DS's last name as my middle name, when I fill out DS's future paperwork, it would be obvious that I am married and his mom.
Do you know anyone who changed their middle name to their DH's last name?
I don't know anyone who did this.

You can change your name and still use your maiden name, plenty of people do that ( ) for professional purposes, but things having to do with your DS, use your DH's name.
ETA-I'm pretty sure you need a Court order to make anything your middle name, just something to consider as well.

Would your work email still be your maiden name?
What if you got a new job, you can't have an email address with your old maiden name, can you?

you absolutely can.
at work all of the legal forms would have your legal name (W-2, payroll, retirement, etc.) but professionally you cna use your maiden name. there are several women i work with that do this. and their emails are also their maiden names.

Why not? Can't it be anything you want it to be?
When I worked for several different law firms I know a lot of female attorneys who do this.

I think this is a great compromise. I made my maiden name my legal middle name but I like your idea even better!
I am not sure how you would do this legally in NY however. Here in CA, you can put any name on your SS card once you marry, produce the license and your name is legally changed to that. I remember friends in NY saying that couldn't happen there

After 9/11 (b/c a lot of terrorists do this ) they changed the rules on it. I did it, I went to the Richmond County Courthouse (lived on SI at the time) to do it. It was painless, and had (I think) a $45.00 fee.
I am attached to my maiden name too, there are no males with our name, so I'd like to hang on to it, it dies with me and my sister

I was going to hyphenate my name but from what I heard it's a PITA because everything must be in the hyphenated name.
I use my maiden name as my middle name.
My certifications, etc.. are with both my full middle name (not initial) and lastname. Most people think it's hyphenated. It's not! So sometimes I am "lastname" only but Professionally everything is maiden name for midddle name and lastname.

A former coworker of mine changed her name but still used her maiden name. Her email addy and everything to do with work had her maiden name.
When she was making calls or doing anything in respect to their children she would use her married name to not cause any confusion.
I changed my name after I got married, but my job never changed my email address so I until I left it was still the same one I had before I was married.

At work my email addy uses my maiden name. Payroll uses my married name. My professional license and all ID associated therewith is in my maiden name. My passport is in my maiden name. I have two driver's licenses - my original one in my maiden name (valid for another 2 years then it will expire and I will be SOL), and my new one in my married name (also set to expire in 2 years).
To change my professional name I have to go to court. I have no desire to do so.

I'm attached to my name.
At work I hyphenate.
For Noah and Robbie's school stuff.. I use his last name.
For appointments that involve NoNo and Robbie - I use his last name.
But legally... my maiden name is still my last name!

When you fill out your kids' paperwork for school, you just use your DH's last name even if it's not your legal last name?
That is the reason why I want to change my name - for DS. When I fill out paperwork for his school, doctor appointments, etc., I want to have the same name.

When Robbie started school, we were not married. I used my maiden name - but they still called me Mrs. S**** even thought it was not my name and I never indicated it was.
All registration paperwork for Noah (I was married) was completed with a hyphenated last name - even though it isn't my legal name. They didn't ask me to prove my name at any time.
Like I said.. it really didn't matter how I wrote my name.. they assumed my last name was the same as my child and just attached a 'Ms.' to the front of it!

I think I will just do that! Use a hyphenated name for DS's paperwork only. When I call the school or they call me, I can simply say I am Mrs. DH.
I really don't want to deal with changing my name legally. It seems like a huge hassle.

I was going to say this too. I never changed my name, and have no intention of changing it. DS has DH;s last name. Anything regarding DS, ped's office, daycare, EI, they call me Mrs. DH. I generally just answer to it, but even when I correct them, or tell them my name, they still call me Mrs. DH.

Re: Is it totally weird to make DH's last name as my middle name and keep my own last name? It's so hard to let go of my last name!
I am legally hyphenated my lastname-his last name but 90% of people in my life know me as my last name. My children know that I have a slight variation on my last name and I explain it very simply that Mommy is her own person and had a last name before she married Daddy. They never question or even care to be honest. Of course, if someone says Mrs. DH's last name that is fine but that is very rare.
There are some companies that do NOT allow you to use a name different than your legal name and some certification professionals must use one name that is on their license.
Personally I would keep your last name. You can still be called Mrs. DH's last name by a teacher or a child's friend.
