Ok, joenick's post freaked me out, let's talk external hard drives
I really should get one, I only have pix backed up to CDs. What do I need to look for in one? I'm not techno saavy at all. Thanks!

What is an external hard drive? How do I get it? Why do I need it?

From the little bit I understand, it's a memory thing for the computer that you connect only when you want to save stuff on it, so that if your computer gets a virus you have another copy of everything. But I have no idea how big I'd need or what company is good.

DO NOT rely on CDS. CDs are not a good source of backup. I've posted a tech article last year? the year beofre that their shelf life is approximately 7 years.
I have a Seagate external hard drive. I don't know how many gigs but it's a lot.
I did have an old one that was corrupt but our IT guy at work retrieved everything - photos, music, etc.

It's a hard drive (akin to the "long term" memory that's in your computer.) .
It usually comes with a USB cable that plugs into the back of your computer.
Also you are completely right to bring it up & cause a panic. I can't tell you how many employees we've had beg our IT guy to retrieve stuff.

Is it like a separate tower (like the CPU thing). Or is it a small machine? Where do I get that? Is it easy to install?

It's a piece of cake to install.
It looks like this:

and has a cord that goes from the back of the computer to the back of the hard drive.
Very easy to install. Your computer should automatically recognize it.
I bought it because I ran out of space on my home computer with the photoshoots & DH's music.

Actually, CDs last a very, very long time. The 7 year life span was for the original CDs. I did some research a while ago, and the short life span concept isn't very accurate.
However, they do get scratched, damaged, etc.
An external hard drive is a regular hard drive that plugs into a USB port (the same kind of port that the mouse, keyboard, camera, memory stick,etc plug into) You can get a few hundred gigabytes for under $100. I have one at work, and one at home. They are really handy.

Thats the one Ive got- althoug DH picked it out-
He does comp graphic design stuff, and with all the photos I do- he said it was a necessity...
It wasnt to bad as far as price either...

I didnt see joenicks post (I will look for it now) but after having some computer problems, I got an external drive and prompty saved all my pics on it. Tons and tons from when my first was born almost 5 yrs ago. What a heartbreak to lose them! It works as an additional drive via USB and is so easy, you dont need any extra software. Everyone should do it ASAP!
