Re: Is it worth it to fly to Florida?
Posted by carolyns4cupcakes my other 3 are non stop in the car. It's starts out talking, laughing, then goes to complaining, fighting, crying, screaming, and then back to talking and laughing. You would have to pay me mega bucks to ride that many hours with them. I would rather roll out of the car doing 30mph. Torture.
Thats how my boys are. They fight over EEEVVVVERRRYTHIIINNNNGG! LOL I think I have to fly. If it was just DH and I or even DH, Peyton and I it would be one thing, but add the boys to the mix and Id be crazy! It would not be a good way to start out a week long trip!

I'd rather stick forks in my eyes! I don't like to drive with my kids if I don't have to.

Re: Is it worth it to fly to Florida?
Can you leave on Monday 2/20 instead as it would be $209 to fly down instead of 338 to fly down Saturday? The bad part is the return flight. If you want to leave on the following Sunday it is 433, but the Monday is 338. Would you be ok with the older DC missing part of one day of school to save $500? If you could take a 6 am or 7 am flight he might get to school an hour or so late. Then again you would need to factor in a hotel. If you stay near the airport for a less expensive hotel it might be worth it. Go to Kayak.com for all of the prices. I typed in leaving from NY, NY to Fort Lauderdale, FL.
ETA: These are direct flights.

Re: Is it worth it to fly to Florida?
We're driving down in April. We decided to drive because the cost to fly during April break plus rent a car prohibited us from taking our usual summer vacation. I think you are a teacher too, so we are constrained by the days off, which usually means the days we can fly to take a full week are the most expensive. I'm actually excited about the drive. It lets us see the country, especially since we are taking 2 days to get down so we can stop along the way.

Re: Is it worth it to fly to Florida?
i would have no problem driving. my parents moved us to FL for a few years and we always drove back and forth. They never stopped, drove straight through.
When my mother would do it solo with us, she would stop for the night in NC.

I would NEVER fly to Florida with small kids. JMHO You would definitely stop more than once. It would take AT LEAST 15 hours.
Did you look at airfare out of the city airports? I know they are cheaper than LI.

Re: Is it worth it to fly to Florida?
Cost wise there is no contest its going to be cheaper to drive during a prime time unless you can use miles or some other big discount. Sanity wise thats another story. You know your family best.
Right now we are planning to drive down to Orlando in April. DS and I got stuck down in Naples for 4 days last year. I wasnt working at the time so it didnt matter for me, DS missed 2 days of school but I was able to get most of his work sent down to us. DH refuses to fly because he is afraid of the same thing happening . I am planning to make the ride as much fun as possible. We will stop overnight in Carolina and just go with the flow.

I'm a teacher so I can't miss a day before or after a holiday. We don't need hotels or rent a cars bc we have so much family there. Its just the flight I'm working on.

When did you sleep?
DH and I took turns driving, and the person who was not driving napped. It was not the best sleep but it was enough to get us there.

Re: Is it worth it to fly to Florida?
we drive.....dh doesn't trust pilots.
When I looked it up once it was going to cost us like $700 for us to fly 3 seats to florida.....
even with 1 hotel night on the way down(usually in the carolina's) we still were going to save at least a couple hundred with our regular V4 car.

Just want to say I feel your pain. Im trying to plan a trip to Florida for April and it will cost about $1600 for airfare for my family of 4. It's crazy! But we may just bite the bullet because the trip is to visit my grandparents who are in their 90s and I want my kids to see them again and I'm pretty sure I'm not driving with a 2 and 4 year old!
This is us exactly. Looking to leave4/4 and to save$ lay over I'm Boston for an hour. It's going to be $1460 for 3 tickets and my son who will be on my lap.
